Humax: allows you to copy up to 5Gb onto a partition of the hard drive
Topfield: no limit
Both are based on the same chipset, so I suspect that they both grumble on the same files - sometimes the Toppy, for example, is picky about VBR files. Both are USB slave devices, so you'll have to copy info onto them.
Some Sagem models (64250 is one) can play MP3s too. I didn't test that extensively when I had one here; it's a USB host, so you plug a memory key or something into it, and copy stuff onto the hard drive.
If you want to play over the network, I'd suggest looking at a standalone streamer; if you're happy copying onto the PVR's hard drive I'd go for the Toppy because it doesn't have the 5Gb limit of the Humax, or the really fussy interface of the Sagem.
