A neighbour has one of these vcr's but no manual - does anyone know where I could look at one? When a video plays there is at the bottom right of the screen a small horizontal box which counts down the video playing. Is it possible to stop this and if so how do you do it?

If this is present on all tapes it must be generated by the VCRs on-screen graphics and there should be a button or option within the VCRs menu to turn it off.
Can you upload a picture of the remote?

unfortunately the original remote died and has been replaced with a generic general one. Using the front buttons I cannot find any way of adjusting anything on this vcr. It produces a great picture but the box is annoying and it is present on all tapes.

Therein lies your problem, features like on-screen graphics choices are normally only accessed through the menu and very rarely on a dedicated button on the machine.
Some generic remotes have access to secondary functions but you would need to study the remote's user manual to see if yours has.
