Hi

What Ian said plus - While all firmwares from 4.03 onwards work with the iPlayer Test Stream 4.14 has a new Device Identifier Code (as far as I can tell) and the official iPlayer stream is expected to only work with this code embedded in 4.14.

Thanks for the replies. I have my DS connected to a Sony 32D3000 TV, what file do I use? It's also connected to a Sony DAV-DZ230 S/S system

DGU+ v1.0 is now available. This is a community-contributed package for the Digital Stream DHR-8203/5u DVR that, in this first version, adds Windows file sharing capabilities to a networked DHR device.

It's based on the widely used Samba open source implementation of the Windows file sharing protocols. It's been tested by a small group, so those of a nervous disposition may want to wait for positive reports on this board before proceeding, but I'm confident that it should work well for all. Thanks is due in no small part to Digital Stream in South Korea, without whom this process would have taken much longer and have resulted in a less smooth and streamlined experience for users.

To install DGU+ v1.0, download this zip file and extract the files onto a USB memory stick. Read the Installation.txt file carefully and follow the instructions.

Please post feedback in this forum - those who are holding back will want the reassurance that it works well, and I'd like to know of any problems!

Just tried DGU+ v1.0 - it works for me! I was surprised at how small it was as well, I thought initially that we would have to have a minimum of a 4GB stick, but my trusty 1GB works fine. I just need to get that little SanDisk one and mod the front USB port so that I can close the front cover ......

Does DGU+ remain installed when USB is removed?

David, after installing DGU+, can the USB stick then be removed and the add-in remains installed? I note the requirement to power down the DS to remove the stick rather than just use the usual menu options.

Yay

Little Sandisk Fit plus USB Physical Mod works great.

Further User Mod additions may require more space on the USB so 4GB may be a sensible minimum going forward if you haven't got a flash drive already.
David may have more idea whether 4GB could ever be too small !!!

The USB stick has to stay in for Samba to work as it has the Samba file system/config (?) stuff on it - there is no writing a Samba Dir to the HDD with the new DST ULS (USB Launch System !) and the DGU+ Mod.

Pete

Any reason why MIT decided to allow user mods to load via the front USB only and not the rear?. If they allowed one of the rear USB ports to be used I wouldn't have a problem with a USB stick hanging out the back and no USB port mods would be required.

Very interesting mod! I've a couple of questions though...

There have been a couple of posts that say this mod only works on a USB drive attached to the front panel. Is this right as the notes supplied with the mod say that it works happily in the rear panel too.

Accessing the DHR is only noted to work from a Windows machine. Can it not be accessed by a Linux or OSX machine at all? I know that Samba shares are definitely accessible using such OSs so is it just that no one has tested it yet?

TIA

Works on any USB Port - The DST USB Launch System/User Launch Facility (ULS/ULF) checks all USB sockets.

Yay - All USB Ports

If Samba works on your Linux/Mac then it will see the DHR.
I just can't test it ! You can though !!!

Fantastic work Pete. Have not got it fully working yet. My windows 7 PC sees the share but when I click on it it says "Windows cannot access \\DHR-820xu - check spelling of the name. otherwise there may be a problem with your network."

I will keep fiddling!

I just hit the Network Icon in Windows Explorer and go from there . . .

Good luck
Pete

ps. I changed the default Media to Media-DHR for clarity in DLNA server folders

Thanks Pete,

It is working very well now. Using VLC I can now view my SD recordings anywhere in the house which is great. Shame it does not work with HD recordings - I assume this is a licensing thing. I am hoping that when DLNA is eventually added I might be able to stream HD content to my digital stream DPS-1000.

Anyway SD recordings stream very well from the DS and it is now so much easier to add photos and archive content.

Absolutely brilliant

If you have an android device - ES File Explorer is able to see the DS easily and allows me to move, copy, delete and transfer files on my Transformer tablet and HTC desire.

Top Tip

On the DLNA front there will probably be no way to stream HD to the DPS1000 as HD is encrypted on the disk and it is against the Freeview Licence to put the decryption keys on any other device (the DHP and DHR machines all share the same key at a given firmware level - this is thought to be OK within the licence rules)

Also probably not possible to stream to another DHR/DHP as this would probably require a lot of work by DST not just by User-Addon hackers !!!

SD for the forseeable future.

Well done

Just to add my thanks. This works a treat. Good to note that that VLC media player handles the .trp files, much easier going through files on the PC.
Wel done to all esp David, excellent work

Thumbs up

SMB sharing working well to both an XP and Vista laptop .

VLC will play SD recordings, but doesn't recognise them by default as a type it can use. Selected to open the file anyway and it worked so I'll look at where to set the file extensions it recognises.

Am currently copying a lot of JPG images to the DHR and noticed immediately that VLC playback was interupted. I guess this points up the fact that the DHR is not designed as a media server. How have those of you that have had DGU+ for a while to play with found it handles situations such as trying to playback via VLC whilst at the same time recording something? Is it the SMB that's slow or the diska access?

Anyway, a great new toy for me to fiddle with . Thanks very much David.

Have you tried installing BS Player Lite? When you click on the file in ES File Explorer, it should ask you to select a media player, select BS Player and it should stream straight to your Android device from your DS. It won't work very well on your Desire though, that's too slow. Also, I'm not sure if ES File Explorer will recognise .trp as a media file.......still, it's worth trying!

Can I just ask a question that's probably been asked a few times before? I live in Wiltshire in the UK and I was wondering if iPlayer is available on the Red Button yet? I'm connected to my network but no Iplayer on my Red Button....am I doing anything wrong?

Cheers

Joe

Hi

BBC have delayed official iPlayer switch on for 4.14 to Tuesday !!!!!!!

(You can check iPlayer function with the Test Stream Code posted before . . . if it is still working)

Hi

I have tried
REC 2x HD
Chase Playback 1x HD
Stream 2x SD

I haven't pushed it any further . . . or pressed too many buttons too rapidly, while doing this, if you know what I mean.

Joe,

I did actually try streaming to my Desire but it could not cope! I will try on my Transformer later.

Oh that's a shame. I thought (wrongly) that because both devices were made by digital stream that they would use the same encryption method.

Super, working using vlc on Kubuntu (linux)

Only issue I have is firewall settings, I had to disable my firewall to get it to work. I allowed ports 137, 138, 139, 445 for Samba but no joy. Does anyone know if there are any other ports that need to be open for this to work?

A big thank you to David for this, really excellent stuff

Now sorry to harp on about iPlayer HD but if I downloaded a HD file to my PC using iPlayer Desktop I understand that this will be in h.264 format which is now supported by 4.14. Will I be able to play this file on my DS?
Thanks again,
Richard

If it's all on the same internal private network, then you shouldn't need to tinker with the firewall at all, let alone disable it.

Are you trying to connect from outside your firewall?

DS playback, recording and viewing is more CPU-intensive than disk-intensive. As Pete said, there doesn't seem to be a conflict between DS native activities and Samba streaming.

In the same way, if we get DLNA streaming working OK from the DS, I wouldn't expect this to conflict with Samba activity.

But doing lots of disk-intensive stuff over Samba might result in a delay to other Samba activity.

Hi

Probably not - While the DHR can play h264 (AVC is native HD broadcast format) the file playback system still requires AVI DivX. I have converted files from MP4 to AVI to play them on the DHR (AVIDemux 2.5.1)

Superb work Davegu and major kudos to DS/MIT too for allowing user mods in such a way. If we can get word out maybe more DS owning Linux gurus will get involved and the DS could become the preferred HD PVR for user modding in much the same way as the Topfield was in the SD PVR World. There's major life in the old dog yet

I hope you don't mind Dave, but I've posted about your mod on Digitalspy, directing users here for the link and for any comments.
