SCART v HDMI

On a 50" plasma would there be a difference in pic quality between SD TV when sent via HDMI or SCART RGB?

This is impossible to answer definetively as it depends on what the source of the SD HDMI does to the signal and if the TV will accept straight 576i over hdmi. Sky boxes for instance insist on deinterlacing 576i to 576p for hdmi connections, most tvs will make a better fist of this let alone scaling to the screen pixels so in this case pute 576i from the scart is likely to be best. You will need to try with whatever combination of source and display you have to find out.

Re: SCART v HDMI

Ok a bit more info, thanks so far

Father in law wants A PVR so ideal opportunity to upgrade my 9150T to a 9300 and give him mine.

So would a 9300T via HDMI give me a better pic than a 9150T via Scart on a Pioneer 5090. I wasn't sure if the TV would upscale the HDMI better than it upscales the scart.

I am only after probabilities.

Perhaps the extra £30 (Amazon) is worth it just for the extra space?

The hdmi might be a convenience but my money's on RGB scart for the best picture. The pioneer's going to have a way better scaler than the 9300.

Deepest sympathy

I know that Tiscali TV (which comes down the phone line) advise that connecting with HDMI should give improved PQ. They don't transmit HD, except for the EPG etc. I can't verify that as I don't have any HDMI sockets on anything.

As already postulated, you'll never know unless you try it with the appropriate equipments hooked up to each other.
In a perfect world with no scaling errors HDMI would be better due to there being 1 less digital to analogue and analogue to digital conversion taking place.
In practice, ADCs and DACS (and especially their anti-aliasing and reconstrucution filters) can actually add a smoothing effect that makes them look better than an all-digital HDMI path - using RGB of course for best quality.

Agreed, although in practice spending extra money to "try" something is not usually an option hence relying on the experience here . I'm not unhappy with my RGB picture - just wondered if an upgrade was worthwhile. From the answers I've decided that if it breaks I'll get HDMI next time but will keep RGB as a perfectly acceptable transmission of SD TV for now.

My TV shows 576i when TV is on, does this sound right?

That is correct, SD TV is always 576 lines interlaced although the horizontal resolution varies (worst to best) 544, 704 and 720 pixels
