Replaced drive in PVR. How having sync issues

Hi,

My other half got a Bush PVR (BUPVR160F1) a year or so ago from Argos and recently the hard drive failed completely. It didn't power-up at all, so I ordered a £30 replacement from Amazon with a similar/better spec. It appears to record programs ok, however on playback it works for a while and then there's a 'juddering' of picture and sound after which the sound is out-of-sync with the picture. Stopping and then continuing playback temporarily fixes it. I could format the drive in the PVR again, although I already did that as part of the installation. The old drive is a WD1600AVBB, and the new drive is Generic Hard Disk Drive 160GB IDE - 1 Year Warranty: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo which I thought had similar/better specs so was optimistic that it would work.
(The old drive should have a 3-yr warranty but I haven't kept the Argos receipt so doubt they'll help.)
Any help gratefully received.

Pvrs require a consumer electronics drive (Usually marked CE or ACE), the AV in the old drive model probably stands for Audio/Video). PC drives have built in data error checking that can delay reads and writes (The odd wrong bit in a pvr drive is not that important). Using PC drives in a pvr can produce exactly the problems you have.

Graham.

That sounds pretty unresolveable but makes perfect sense. I'll have to make use of it in my PC instead ;-)

Can you recommend an online shop where I can buy a drive which is definitely going to be CE as opposed to a PC drive?

Thanks

Russell

IDE ones are getting hard to find these days, you could try ringing turbosat. I bought a 250Gb drive to use in a Topfield 5800 about 12mnths ago.

Turbosat International Ltd

Other than that using a sata to ide converter might let you use a sata AV drive.

If you have time, you might find something useful in this thread - if it'll work in a Digifusion it should be OK for any PVR, I reckon (stand to be corrected):

Upgrading Fusion Hard Drive? - Digifusion - Digital Spy Forums

I've ordered the following from www.saverstore.com in Bedfordshire:-
Western Digital WD1600AVJB AV 160GB 7200rpm 8MB Cache 3.5" PATA IDE-100 CE Hard Drive
£50 including £5 extended warranty (bearing in mind previous experience with WD HDD) and £6 postage.

Fingers crossed...

Unhappy No joy

Hi guys,

The new HD doesn't playback anything at all, just a black screen. I've checked connections, reformatted using the PVR and reset the PVR to factory defaults. B&^%*&%^!

I guess I'll have to try and return the HD to saverstore.com it and then buy another PVR?
