Unhappy Pvr???

Hi,
I have never done this before but i am in desperate need of someones help regarding a pvr, my partner mentioned that he wanted a pvr through conversation with a friend and i thought it would be a great idea for a xmas present. i have to be honest and say i know nothing about technology so any help with guiding me to the right area would be very much appreciated. All i heard him say was that it records anything from the tv and has a hand controller, he also mentioned it will have input and outputs.
Please help
Thanks again

Re: Pvr???

This is rather problematic, because PVRs come in various forms - for a start would it be a Freeview PVR or Freesat PVR; then what size hard disc would it be? Then, is it really a PVR your partner wants, or could it be a DVD/HDD recorder, which are often confused with PVRs. And of course cost comes into this - there is one PVR currently on the market at £100; but PVRs & recorders are more generally between £150 & £250.

Consequently, while other forum members may have other ideas, I would advise either forgetting the surprise element & discussing this with your partner; or possibly getting the friend to whom he mentioned it to find out just what your partner wants.

Otherwise, you risk giving your partner a present which is not quite what he wants; but he may reluctantly accept so as not to disappoint you.

Re: Pvr???

I agree with Geofbob, most chaps would happily forego the surprise for the sheer geeky fun of poring over technical specs to get the exact shiny object of joy they want.

If you want to surprise him make him a fake voucher entitling the bearer to one free PVR of his choosing and give him that on Christmas morning, although you may have a quiet Christmas as he sits staring at computer screens deciding which to get.

A brilliant suggestion.
