Question LCD AV Link compatible media recorder?

Hi

I have recently bought a Toshiba 42XV635DB TV and I am very happy with it.

I notice in the Freeview guide that it seems possible to schedule programs to record onto an external hard drive and also, there is a pause button on the remote which freezes the picture but as yet, does not actually record anything. so maybe it is possible to have have a PVR system going. I am very interested in setting this up and wonder if anyone can advise me on what device to get please? It needs to be AV link compatible according to the manual.

I already own a Digifusion 145 but would prefer to use a simple hard drive with none of the gubbins inside to just record directly using the freeview guide inside the TV. Also, I want to be able to have this harddrive come on when the TV is on rather than have it whirring away constantly like the digifusion does. If this is not a feature present in the hard drive, I guess I could just use one of those power plugs that detects when one device is on and supplies power to another. Even better, does anyone know if the USB port in the TV can supply enough power to run a hard drive directly?

Thanks

Re: LCD AV Link compatible media recorder?

I'm not techie and I know I'm not addressing what you want to do, but do you realise that unless your TV has 2 tuners you would only be able to record the channel that the TV was set on? IMO you'd be better off buying a PVR without a fan (as the noise of the Digifusion bothers you), like the Alba 160gb or Hitachi 250gb that Argos have. With those (Vestel based) PVRs you only get the occasional whirr or click of the hard drive. They have a no-nonsense EPG (Freeview Guide, as you call it) from which recordings are easy to set and they are even more user-friendly than the Digifusion (which I have used but mine was a euphemistically termed "refurb" and only lived a few weeks).

It's a possibility with the Vestels that you get a faulty one but you can always exchange it if that should happen.
