Watchmen: The End is Nigh

I just spotted this on the PSN store and I'm downloading the demo now. Anyone played it yet?

IGN gave it 5.5, sounding like a poor mans Streets of Rage - so not looking too good

Downloaded it, played it once, deleted it.

Seemed a bit "samey" and awkward to control. Definitely feels like it's been rushed to market to cash in on the film (which is never a good sign).

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

I gave it a go and its actually not toooooo bad, I quite like the old skool style beat em ups like this.

The problem is the price, £12.99 is alot when your supposedly only going to get 3-4 hours play from it.

Apparently this is episodic, any idea how many more there are to come?

They should have done some kind of deal where you buy all of them together to save a bit (like Qore)

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

Downloaded the trial and it's OK, but not something i'd buy at £12.99. It's reasonable fun for a quick bash but it's very repetitive and does feel like a game from the 90's. The visuals are rather average at best and whilst some of the moves are fairly satisfying, their enjoyment wains after doing them a couple of times.

As soon as the trial finished I felt that i'd probably played about enough of it and had no desire to invest in the full game. I could see this franchise making a good, slightly deeper RPG/Action type game in the Diablo type mould, but for me this is just too repetitive and simple.

It's the kind of game i'd probably chuck a quid into if I was a kid down the amusements and if it was say £3 on PSN i'd probably dabble. £12.99 is rather too steep though IMO.

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

It was a bad idea to turn Watchmen into a video-game, it is an absolute insult to the source material that they actually turned it into a pretty boring roaming beat-em-up.

The only way a video game could have any relevance to the comic would be to make it a serious, film-noir-style mystery adventure with little action and lots of atmosphere.

A real shame

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

^^^Yeah, it does have trophies.

Just finished this tonight playing through it split-screen with my brother. He played through as Night-Owl, I was...er...the other bloke.

The basic gameplay is that you enter an area, are attacked by a handful of dudes and then move onto the next area. Enemies are not as same-y as the reviews indicate: blokes without melee weapons, blokes with melee weapons both usually accompanied by a bigger bloke.

There are areas where the two split up, usually to open up a door for the other character but sometimes going by different routes to the same destination.

The two characters have slightly different attack options and there are little tokens that have to be walked through to open up some moves. Night-Owl has a groovy 'electrical' attack, whereas er...the other bloke has an equally groovy rage attack.

It kept us going for 3 days, though admittedly we weren't playing it all the time. It wasn't brilliant but, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I only really bought it because it's 2 player lure and as a co-op experience it was reasonably good fun.

Unless your a die-hard fan of the film/graphic novel or of fight-games, I'd stick with the free trial on PSN for an example of the gameplay.

If your on the look-out for a 2 player offline Co-op, then you'll have a laugh, especially at the sick finishing moves your partner carries out.

Lovely.

ETA:

Played this through solo with both characters and took between 5 and 6 hours. Admittedly it my have been longer if I hadn't played it through with my brother the first time. I died a couple of times with Rorshach but not at all with Night-Owl.

One thing I didn't mention was the story, which whilst nothing amazing, does leave the possibility of something better and involving in any future download...

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

Er...Part 2 of the 'Watchmen' game is more of the same...so far. What I have noticed is the difficulty appears to have been ramped up.

What is annoying is the pointlessness of Rorshach's 'rage' attack. In the previous episode when the bar (finally) reached full, you knew that when activated, your attacks were going to be stronger and, that your character was going to be impervious for that time. Not so in Part 2...

The attacks are still stronger but, your character is vulnerable. Considering the amount of time it takes to get the rage bar full, it's an ability that is not really worth having.

I'm currently near the end (I hope :P) of Chapter 3 and the gameplay has consisted of the following:

Where possible allow Night Owl's charge to build up, zap as many villains as possible and then try and take out as many of these thugs as possible. If this fails, run around the area until Night Owl's charge builds again and repeat.

It's as boring as it sounds...

I've been playing through the game (as in Part 1) with my brother. We are currently stuck chasing some leather-clad boss chick and cannot progress beyond an area on the roof where there is little room to run around and end up getting our asses kicked by the 10 thugs on it.

Part 1 had it's difficult parts but, it was actually more fun than this dirge...

If anyone else has progressed further or, has any ideas please put me out of my misery...

To anyone thinking of buying the d/led Part 2 or, the upcoming discs, try out the trials on the PSN first...at least.

Re: Watchmen: The End is Nigh

You're right near the end of the game.

I didnt complete it in Co-op mode but you need to wait before you start until you have a full rage meter, Nite Owls builds up on its own. Then its mostly running away from the goons using Counter Attacks until you've built up enough rage. I found Rorshach easier than Nite Owl to do this with as he seems to be better at Counter Attacking. If you can stun and throw them to the floor, it only takes a couple of digs to finish them off. But its mostly run and counter attack.

After you beat those 10 goons, you climb up another ladder and then you fight about 8 women (easy). Then its one more ladder to fight the leather woman-boss, i forget her name.

Then you get to fight each other - Rorshach vs Nite Owl.

I quite enjoyed the game, although I cant deny its tedious at times and extremely short. I actually bought the disc for £17 off of Play. Completed both episodes with both characters in 2 days and now its for sale on ebay !
