ps3 60 hz problem? screen flickering help

hi strange one this i bought a32lg7000 lcd 1080p and everything was fine playing the gamesi usually play cod 5 fifa etc then i bought far cry 2 and mirrors edge and noticed mirrors edge flickers on loading screen which i can live with but far cry 2 is awfull,it flickers badly during movement and screen goe sout of focus then returns when u run fast,i have tried every setting on the ps3 i can think of iv le the ps3 automatic detect the settings and ive manually selected each setting 720p.1080i,1080p etc unchecking the others, and a combination of each with no effect,i thought it must be my tv but the thing is i took my ps3 to my dads today same ps3 same hdmi lead used it on his hdtv and same problems especially far cry two which flickers like crazy and screen goes in and out of focus, then i tried it on my brothers non hd tv using the ps3 component cable and same issues so i was relieved that it wasnt my tv,on the way home i decided to pop into gamestation and bought a blue ray film to test that and another copy of far cry 2 as i thought maybe i had a dodgy copy as this is the only game really that plays up this bad ,got home tried my transformers blu ray which looked fantastic no flickering or any issues,i then put on the new copy of far cry 2 and awfull results again flickering and focus issues i dont understand it as i have tried around 11 other 720p ps3 games that play fine, apart from drakes fortune and mirrors edge that both have slight flickering on loading screen but none during gameplay, the otheri have tried wwf sdown 2009.gta virtua tennis, topspin .tiger woods, fifa 09 etc which are also 720p play perfectly, tried to ring sony but can never get through someone suggested making sure 100hz is turned off and 60 hz selected but i have the latest ps3 update and cannot find this setting anywhere all i can find is aoption saying 50hz on or automatic? which i have tried both,i know my tv is ok as when i select only 720p on my ps3 i press info onmy tv remote and it tells me my hdmi channel is didplaying 720p 60hz and when i select 1080p it says 1080p 60hz,i cant uncheck 576p on the ps3 settings either is this normal? thanks

Got to be honest with you here Kaiser. I've tried to read your query but it's really hard! You've written everything in one big lump with no gaps.

I'm not having a go, but it would be a lot easier to help you if you broke it down into chunks and spread it out.

People scan through here when they've got half an hour to spare. If it's hard to read a post, a lot of times, they'll just read something else.

Like I said it's not meant to be a criticism just a way for you to get the answers you need.

Agreed. That is not the way to post really and it's very hard to read. Infact I suspect most people will just ignore it rather then try and read it. When posting anything it's always best to divide the text into separate individual sections and to use full stops and comas where necessary. If I wasn't a Mod and didn't have to read it for that reason I wouldn't have bothered reading it at all.

Good to have you on board Kaiser Forgot to mention before about using too much textspeech, i've noticed that doesn't go down too well either!

If it's only one game that doesn't look right then it could be just the coding for that game. Some don't always display well, it's a shame but does happen.
Dodgy HDMI cables can cause some problems (but if blueray playback is fine yours should be ok).

Changing the drive mode on your telly is an option sometimes. My telly has the option of 3 different drive modes, one is good for freeview but not very good for bluerays, one suits gaming the best as it reduces motion blur a bit and the other is a bit of both.

I get a bit of flickering on some loading screens occasionally but can't remember if I have for games

I would google your 'tv' and 'ps3' and 'flickering' to see if it is a known issue. I'd do the same thing for Farcry to see if it's a known problem with the game.

Try another HDMI lead if you have got one. I had one that sent the sound a bit funny but was fine for everything else. That could be the source of your problem as information has to pass both ways down the HDMI cable which would possibly cause flicker.

The output settings on the ps3 are more to do with resolution and scaling the image so I can't see that causing flicker but could be wrong here.

Also if your telly has more than one HDMI input on it try that and see if there is a difference.

Good luck with it

Edit: p.s. Don't forget you can edit a message once posted, that might bring in a few more suggestions from other people!

Re: ps3 60 hz problem? screen flickering help

thanks it is not just far cry ive also noticed it in afew more ps3 games now

thing is everything was fine on my old lg lcd which was standard hdmi ,
now this lcd is hdmi 1.3 and i have bought a 1.3 hdmi compliant cable and also have tried my previous standard hdmi cable off my older tv.

could it just be that ive bought a dodgy 1.3 cable i would have thought so but the thing is blue ray films work great on the ps3, and i have tried the ps3 scart component cable in the tv too which reduces the flicker dramatically but its still there

From what I know both cables should work. A cable rated at 1.3 has just been tested to that compliance (1.3) it doesn't mean a cable rated at 1.1 wont work its just not been officially passed as a 1.3 cable.

I suppose it depends what kind of flicker you are getting? I get it occasionally which I think is the tv and the ps3 'handshaking' (might be wrong here), when I load a game the screen will flicker and the output resolution will display in the top right of the screen, this might happen a couple of times until the game loads.

To solve this you need to follow a logical path. i.e
Try ps3 on another telly via HDMI - if good picture then poss original tv's fault
Try another HDMI cable on one or two tellys - should solve whether HDMI issue

Again I would suggest that you check your telly and see if there is a different drive mode, It could be that your telly is trying to output a frequency that is making the image flicker?

Re: ps3 60 hz problem? screen flickering help

right i think the problem is simply a 1080p 720p issue that the occasional flicker or screen blur you dont really notice on a 720p tv that when played on a 1080p tv the flickering is noticable a lot more and some 1080p lcds can handle playing 720ps a lot better than others.

i took my ps3 to my friends tonight his lcd has a maximum 720p output i connected my ps3 and my 720p farcry 2 and the flickering was far less noticable than on my 1080p.

where as all my 1080p games run fine the tv seems to struggle with downscaling to play some 720p games while others it will play ok.

maybe trying a different hdmi cable might produce better results but i think maybe some 1080p lcds handle downscaling to 720p better than others.

does this sound feasable or am i way off the beaten track lol?

Re: ps3 60 hz problem? screen flickering help

I dunno mate. you say in your first post that it happened on your dads telly and on your brothers telly too. I can't fathom why it would play a blueray fine. If it's definitely happening on more than one telly it has to be either the console or the HDMI lead in my mind, some people have had flickering that they think is caused by a 'handshake' issue. which is something to do with how the tv and ps3 establish communication over the HDMI cable but I would have thought that it would work on another telly.

I might suggest doing a system reset on the console but google this as I've never done it and don't know what you would have to back up or what stuff you might loose by doing it. The reason I suggest this is that it could be software related in the ps3 and maybe a reset will let you start again. Like I say though make sure you check this on google

Flickering on 3 TV's? That's unusual.. I suppose the cable needs changing first, and then the PS3.
