PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

Help Please

I have conected my PS3 to my Philips all in one DVD for surround sound. I get 5.1 for games but for blueray it clicks into Pro Logic and makes a low clicking noise. Anyone had this and know the cure?

Have you checked your settings under the VIDEO option? How do you have your PS3 audio connected to your Philips 5.1? If it is via OPTICAL then go to VIDEO SETTINGS and change the audio output from LINEAR PCM to BITSTREAM. Also rerun the AUDIO SETUP and make sure you click on OPTICAL and AUTOMATIC so it applies the audio formats your 5.1 can decode

Hope that helps

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

Sound is changed to Bitstream. I output via HDMI to my Plasma which is then connected to my surround via digital co ax. So I'm outputting via bitstream and have the hdmi set for 5.1.

Have you set up the audio as CO'ax under the audio settings?

Wasn't aware you could do that. Is that under sound settings?

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

Are you sure it's not something to do with outputting optical from the plasma? I tried your set up with my telly and found that the optical out on the plasma could not handle certain stuff so it came out as sterio (showing as pro logic II on receiver). I just swapped optical straight into amp and got surround on all formats

I have the Xbox running 5.1 through the tv and it works fine. DVD on the PS3 plays at 5.1 on the surround as does games so it's an issue with blueray.

Interesting, how would the telly know though? Surly all the PS3 knows is to send 5.1 through HDMI.

That's what I thought. something to do with True hd or Dolby digital in bluerays. I might be wrong here but they can't pass over an optical connection cos it's too restrictive. You have to HDMI straight into a suitably rated amp and then to telly

Paulflee I can't remember what the options are but you could try disabling some of the sound settings in the ps3 and see if you can get the standard 5.1 sound to pass through (i.e. it might be possible do disable the signal your telly can't pass through )

Hope this helps as it's just about all I know about sound

Edit: It's the new lossless formats it struggles with - Dolby True HD and DTS-master audio

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

I'll maybe restirct the PS3 to just 5.1 or 5.1dts output. See if it's trying to put too much through the HDMI.

Edit: And turn of the optical settings. maybe it thinks the 5.1 is going through them. Anyone got any experiance of this with PS3 and HDMI?

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

Optical (Toslink or digital Co-Ax) does not have enough bandwidth to carry DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD formats.

The PS3 is outputting these over HDMI to your TV but the TV isn't capable of passing these through to your surround system.

You can check what format the PS3 is outputting by pressing select during BR playback and looking at the audio codec dispalyed at the top of the screen.

Afraid your not going to be able to get HD audio formats so you will need to choose the standard DTS/DD soundtracks.

DTS/DD is fine as that's all the dvd will play. So if I restrict it to DTS then the tv should pass that through.

The display said 5.1ch when I checked. It's wierd why it reverts to pro Logic and only for Blue ray not DVD playback and game playback which both do 5.1.

The ps3 will only output sound via HDMI OR Optical. If you've got sound outputting over HDMI to telly that should be job done (i.e. no need to play with optical settings). That's my understanding anyway

The pro logic to me says that the amp is receiving a two channel signal. I'm not sure DVD's and Games have the lossless audio encoded in them so that makes sense to me, which is why your amp gets 5.1 sound with them. Again I'm sure there's more to it than that but hopefully de-selecting in the ps3 menu will sort it

So how do I deselect DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD. Is it on the Video playback menu under blueray?

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

It seems it's the hd audio formats causing the problem, as you're outputting lpcm over hdmi to your tv and then the tv is trying to pass that on via digital coax to your amp. It's then reverting to 2ch audio.

Correct me if i'm wrong - that's how i read your setup!

If you change audio output over hdmi to bitstream it should only send dd / dts on, as ps3 cannot send hd audio as bitstream.

That might fix it? I assume your tv is capable of passing on 5.1ch bitstream and not just stereo output!

Have you considered just connecting ps3 to your amp directly with optical or an optical / digital coax converter? Might make it a bit less complicated!

It's not in the blueray menu
I think you need to go to sound settings, you should then get a horizontal sub menu (shows HDMI / optical out etc) scroll right once and all the sound settings should be there. Deselect digital 5.1 (it's the only one you can try) you should still have the other 5.1 highlighted (is it dts?). Hopefully this should work as I would have thought that no lossless sound will be sent to the telly. Saying that these things are never simple

Re: PS3 5.1 surround sound problem

I think it's to do with the higher bitrate of the core dd / dts track on blu rays. It's not dthd / dts hd ma, but still superior to standard dd / dts. Perhaps the digital coax can't handle it or tv can't output it?

Could try firstly ensuring audio output is bitstream over hdmi (because lpcm is too much for the digital coax to take from tv to the amp), then do custom sound settings and only tick 5.1ch dd and dts. Might sort it!

EDIT- i see that's pretty much exactly what you've suggested sheff!

Good stuff lot for me to try when I get home!

Looking forward to the wife tutting at me as i click from blueray to setting menu when all she wants to do is watch telly!

Oh I could just connect to your amp directly with optical or an optical / digital coax converter but then my xbox would have no sound. Ahh thought these things were getting simplier.

Colspark, you need to put 'Make sure your audio is set to bitstream' as your footline. I'm sure I've seen you type that more than anything else on here

That's why you find so many on here go for a seperate AV Receiver/Speaker setup. Plenty of inputs for all your toys

this is the rear end of my Onkyo 606

Might be worth investing in an optical switch to give you the extra inputs to your home theatre. The sound quality will be greatly enhanced in comparison to the pro-logic version you currently are getting from routing audio through the TV.

Must get me an Onkyo. Have seen this and the 806 on offer in Richer Sounds in the past couple of weeks. I guess you have too if you're the same Uridium from HUKD How to convince 'the boss' of our need for a new receiver is a tricky one.

heh! Yes, "bitstream over optical" and "lpcm over hdmi"- i can type those really really fast now!

as Lee12 said, it would seem the better option, if you have optical input, to just get an optical switch and connect your ps3 and xbox360 direct to your surround.

I don't know much about digital coax, but if it can't handle the higher bitrate of the dd / dts core tracks on blu ray, and that's causing the problem, that might be your only way round it...

You have more HDMI inputs then me Got meself the 605 which only has x2 HDMI but I have the PS3/EP30 plugged up via HDMI. I was worried because I could not do the SkyHD but to my understanding SkyHD only sends 2 channel via HDMI and 5.1 via OPTICAL.

Get one of these for a tenner then connect from PS3 direct to your surround system
