Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

You don't need to spend big money on a HDMI cable, I ordered one of these earlier for £12 delivered and its about as good as you will get. Play.com (UK) : Monster 200 HDMI 1 Metre Cable : Electronics - Free Delivery

Only 1m in length though.

A £5 cable will do the same job though.

Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

This old chestnut!

have a look at the thread "hdmi cables- what you need to know before buying" by Zeromajor.

Basically any one will do. Just get yourself a cheap one that has a decent build quality and you're good to go.

You'll get the same result from a £5 cable as a £500 cable. It's digital- cables cannot improve 1's and 0's and digital signals do not degrade - they basically work or they don't.

Yes they all support 1080p, even the £5 ones.

If you have an argos near where you live you could pick up one of these http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...HDMI+CABLE.htm

I have one and its as good as any cable I own.

Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

Hi Robbie,
Don't get stressed or anything when it comes to this HDMI issue. The monster cable on play.com will do the job you need it to do. I have a PS3 and a Sony KDL-46V4000 TV, I get 1080p resolution from the PS3 and HD-MA sound from my blu-ray films (the ones which offer HD-MA audio) with my standard HDMI cable.
Colspark said it best - "Basically any one will do".

Take it easy.

Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

Back in July I bought a Bravia LCD, which came with a free PS3, and was offered a £60 HDMI cable by the salesman (in the Sony Centre), which he insisted was "essential for such a high-end set-up"!

Thankfully, I'd done my research and had already bought a cheap (in price) HDMI cable from ebuyer.

The cable has been in constant use since July without any issues and so, along with the 1000s of happy reviewers on the ebuyer site, I would recommeded it to anyone.

It was £2.99 including delivery back then, but is still only £3.98 (+ p&p):

Plexus Gold Plated HDMI to HDMI Cable (Black) 2m - Ebuyer

Are people saying that my £80 HDMI cable is waste of money then???
Monster "MC1000HDDEX-1M" ultra high speed 1M HDMI cable - Littlewoods Direct

Surely this one is "superior"???

Good idea to look for v1.3 High Speed cables if using on 1080p sources such as PS3/Blu-ray etc.

I don't like the thick cable. Hard to bend. I have one like it. Nope.. not superior.

Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

Don't buy into any of the snake oil marketing rubbish that certain manufacturers spout.

If you want to buy one of those on the basis of build quality then go ahead, but for the sake of something that goes around the back of your telly which you'll never see do you really want to be shelling out the big bucks?

This topic comes around every other month and it's the same answer. A digital signal is either on or off and a £5 job will do exactly the same thing as any other (apart from displease people with a need for unnecessary expense)

Just think of all the blu-rays you could have for that £100 cable

We're talking cables, not the HDMI specification itself.

I have lost count of the countless times we have charged £45 callout to go look at a customer's 'faulty' tv/recorder/blu-ray etc. We always take a half-decent HDMI cable on the basis that 9 out of 10 of these 'faults' are caused by cheaply made HDMI cables. Replace the cable and hey presto, everything works. Hence the advice to check for v1.3 High Speed when buying cables. They don't have to cost a lot, but they do need to be up to the job.

For what the OP wants it would not matter if the cable was 1.3 or not unless he wanted HD Audio and he would only get that if it was plugged into a capable amp/reciever. The cheap 1.3 cables are NOT normally tested btw so it could be a faulty cable just like any other HDMI cable, I was told that they normally test 2 cables from every batch of cheap HDMI cables made (the 1st and last), and it dosent matter what the spec is.

And in every single one of th4ese threads comes in someone similar to yourself who misunderstands the advice i'm trying to give.

I understand the need for some people to make a purchase based on build quality - i.e knowing it will hold up and not fall apart after 5 minutes. The fact remains that many £5 or less cables are perfectly capable of doing the job any other cable will.

Re: PS3 HDMI Cable?

My friend works for Armour, whom own QED along with some other major brands and he tells me all sorts of 'interesting' stories about HDMI cables

I got most of my stuff from him including a 1m HDMI 'reference' lead which runs from my AVR to panel. It retailed for £150.00ish and costs them about £5

He then added..."They don't have to cost a lot, but they do need to be up to the job." - which to me means, don't buy really thick cables that pull themselves out and are difficult to cable manage etc and are rated 1080p...but don't go mad spending lot's of cash...which is waht you're saying.

By rights, if it were to be a sticky anywhere it should be in the cables and interconnects section.

I'll look at putting it into the FAQ though.

I was just thinking about the amount of times a 'what hdmi cable should I buy?' type thread appears on this section in particular
