Quiet running was one of the main reasons for using a standalone (Mainly as the PS3 does not have dedicated upscaling hardware the Cell works hard during upscaling so it is pretty noisy when upscaling)
The SD370E upscales as well as the PS3 and it's silent. Cost me £35 from Superfi.
Multiregion playback isn't an option with the PS3 and i can also use my Logitech Harmony remote with my DVD player. Yes i know i could by IR2BT for the Ps3 but haven't got round to it yet.
Some of the earlier PS3's are seeing the odd BR-ROM failures now so saving the drive for only BR playback can only extend the life of the drive IMO as well. |
Yeah - I've got a Sony HXD890 recorder on the way to take up DVD playback duties for the reasons mentioned above: Can play R1 DVDs which the PS3 can't, will be quieter (my 60gig PS3 can get
relatively noisy after 45 mins of video playback) and should save wear and tear on my PS3 which is important as it is the 60gig model and not easy to replace.
I do have an older multiregion DVD player but it only has scart video output and I wanted something with HDMI for my LCD panel. The picture quality on the PS3 looks noticeably better than this player so I've been using it for DVDs too as it's so much nicer.
In general though, if you have the newer PS3 which is typically quieter and easily replaceable and you don't need R1 DVD playback, no need to buy a seperate DVD deck as the PS3 makes an excellent DVD player.
