PS3 strange click and controller issues

Hi all,

Got a new 80gb PS3 from play yesterday and for some reason every 30 seconds or so it makes a little click noise. The hard drive doesn't seem to make any noise when being accessed so i don't really know what the noise is.

This did not happen with the 40gb version i had previously so it is a little worrying, any ideas ?

Click coming from which part/where? and if only doing certain things?

It appears to be the hard drive, the click noise lasts for about 15 minutes from a cold boot, every 13 seconds or so. Then the noise stops, when i reboot the console it starts again but only makes the sound two or three times before resuming silent operation again.

From my experience with pc hard drives a click noise usually means problems, however that is usually accompanied with alot of seeking and scratching which this does not do.

Sounds to me it's the Hard drive.

I started a demo downloading and put Play TV on and the click has started again.... it occurs every 10 seconds and the PS3 has been on for at least 30 mins now. However it then appears to stop for a while.

Should i get a replacement or just stick this out and see how it goes, anyone got a 80gb ps3 that could test and see if they have any clicking after a cold boot ?

I get clicks after a cold boot but it only last a minute or so clicking every 15 or so secs but not for 15 or even 30 minutes like you say.

Do you ever notice it again coming back ? or just after a cold boot ?

Mine just did it again maybe 4 times then stopped

It does come back once or twice but I don't really notice it. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes it doesn't. It's due to the plastic expanding and contracting when it heats and cool. Best advice is to put the PS3 where it has alot of space to "breathe" and is well ventilated.

Hopefully that is what it is and there are no problems to contend with, just had my first hour on Wipeout HD and no problems encounted, also watching Soccer Saturday with no problems either

New problem discovered.... the controller stops working.. kindof.

Once in the XMB it stopped responding, however I could still press the PS3 button and control that menu but not the XMB.

Second time I was playing Motorstorm and I couldn't control the game menu but by pressing the PS button I could control the XMB.

When this happened I tried a different controller but same thing happened. I had to quit out of the game for the controller to come back. Both times I was recording on Play TV, not sure if this is anything to do with it but worth mentioning.

Any ideas? Anyone else got Play TV and had this problem?

Same issue as yourself. I actually returned my last PS3 because of this problem and the new one has the same issue only not as loud. It could be the plastic expanding or it could be a hard drive issue. Incidently this laptop i'm using atm makes the EXACT same click/pop every 20-30 seconds. Queston is, does the click/pop mean a hard drive is failing? If so then Sony needs to use a different hard drive as the failure of the current hard drive is pretty high judging from both Ps3s i have owned. Maybe i'm just really unlucky.

Was the controller you were using still set to controller 1 at the time? Just a thought, when PlayTV started recording, mayeb it set itself as controller one? (Probably clutching at straws, but I don't have PlayTV, so just having a stab

)

Mine always makes that same noise, sounds like its accessing the HD. Does it every minute or so. Cant hear it over a game or anything though so I'm not too bothered. Did have to talk myself out of returning it though as it was a free replacement for my broken 40GB.
