Not another fan noise thread - first impressions

Hi all!

Just took the plunge with a new PS3 80GB, mainly to get on the Blu-ray bandwagon but also enjoy some HD gaming

Well, the second I booted up I was slightly disappointed. I wouldn't class it as 'noisy', but it is somewhat irritating (it's made worse by the fact I'm always listening for it - I've always been extremely pedantic with equipment noise (a dreadful curse)).

In fact, I'd say it was slightly louder than a Tosh EP-30 player (for those of you that own one, I hope this will be an adequate reference).

Like I say, I honestly can't call it loud, but it's just *there*, slowly wooshing away...

It doesn't bother me for gaming, I just like that 'bliss' factor when watching films (and yes, I tend to like a lot of films that are on the talky/quiet side - so much for drowning out the fan )

I seriously wish I could just accept it - I hate the fact that something so petty bothers me. I was just hoping it could be a *tad* quieter.

MY QUESTION: is there any chance the fan will drop after an update, or once I've gone through the setup (I haven't even got round to setting it up yet!). Will I slowly become accustomed to it?

On a lighter note, Happy New Year!

Alex

Re: Not another fan noise thread - first impressions

Basically mate, they're all going to make *some* fan noise. All this talk of people having "silent" consoles is, in my opinion, misleading.

The lowest fan level is about the same noise as an lcd tv, next one about the same as a sky box, next one about the same as a laptop.
My ps3 rarely goes above that, and is usually on the first two. I'd call it "quiet", but i've heard xbox360's and faulty ps3's!

It'll be unique to each person's setup, but internal temperature, and fan noise, is dependent on a few factors; ambient temp; what the airflow is like around the machine; frequency / duration of use; what it's doing; condition of the machine; etc.

Basically if it's getting anywhere near xbox360 noise levels then it may have a latent defect and be overheating, in which case sony may replace or repair it.
Otherwise the fan is just doing its job dispersing the hot air. I'd say don't worry about it mate.

Have you tried moving it perhaps? Putting it upright, getting the airflow around it improved, etc?

I have a Toshiba EP-30 and its my main dvd player since doing a multiregion hack on it. Mine hardly makes any noise at all and my 60gb ps3 is perhaps twice as loud and even that seems super quiet next to my 360.

Sounds like you need an entertainment device without a cooling fan;

From now on, its only going to get louder as BR's get more intensive to decode, and as dust etc. builds up inside the system.

I have anew 500gb hd in my ps3 i thought it was going to be louder than the 60 it replaced but it is still just as quiet. The ps3 makes the 360 sound like an industrial drill.

I've had the same experience with my 80GB PS3 and was one reason for purchasing a stand-alone blu-ray player.

Thanks for all the feedback

@colspark - Yeah, it's got plenty of ventilation (on the floor, foot space all around, standing vertically). Like you say, every setup is uinique, plus the topic of 'noise' is such a hard one to judge! (though since you mention it, I'd say a laptop would be a good indication of the current 'noise' level).

@bonzobanana - It'd certainly be cheaper

@getgaff - I always knew a dedi player would be the safe option (esp. something like the BD35). But temptation gave way and I had to get it!
