Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

Hi,

Ok, I was wanting to get a conclusion once and for all on the different PS3's Graphics Chip.

Everyone's been doing it with the Xbox360s and the Jaspers/Falcons, so we can all do it with the PS3's.

Many rumours have been going about that the CECHJ was the first PS3 console with 65nm RSX.

And that every 80GB PS3's has the 65nm RSX too.

However its been raised in another thread that the first PS3 console with 65nm RSX was the CECHL 80GB (meaning the first run CECHK 80GB consoles also has the 90nm RSX).

I personally own a CECHJ 40GB and I own a watt meter from Maplins.

Does anyone own a watt meter and a 80GB PS3 with serial numbers ending CECHL, CECHM or any 160GB console.

Finally just to round things off to get a full conclusion does anyone own a 40GB console with CECHH or CECHG serial numbers and a watt meter just to see if these in game wattages are higher than both mine and the later 80GB's.

It would be fair to do the test with the same game, I have quite a few so don't mind waiting for the other person that has the above to suggest the game to compare wattages with.

Thanks for the help, but am just trying to get to the bottom of this.

Re: Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

I wish I had a watt meter

Even doing it at idle would be good enough (if it's hard to get the same game).

One thing I will say is that my 160gb was a lot quieter and cooler than my recent 80gb.

But in saying that when I had a 40gb I actually had a hairdryer one that ramped up after ten minutes but got it exchanged for another quieter cooler 40gb.

So even amongst the same models there is defintely some inconsistencies.

Really you would want to do it in game, as on the desktop the Graphics Card will barely be used.

You really want it working to see how much power it draws.

You're right ideally you would want to do both idle and in game.

But on idle those who have tested have shown differences between the various models, so it would give some indication.

To make sure the same game can be used do the test with a downloaded demo.

Does the output resolution need to be the same? ie does 720p over hdmi make it work harder than sd over a scart lead.

Your putting too much thought into this,

Surely someone with a PS3 would have at least one game, and that game wont be an obscure title, it will be a big popular title like Fifa09, Motorstorm 2, GTAIV or Little Big Planet etc.

Yes the Graphics card will be working more displaying a hidef image than standard def, I just took it as a given that basically most people would have the PS3 connected by HDMI.

Do you have a watt meter and one of the above serial PS3's?

I mean if you, or anyone with the above, just bought the Ps3 for its movie playback abilities, you could slap in a Blu-Ray and we can do the watt readings with a movie, as the graphics card will be used during blu-ray playback.

Its really just though a quick general test to confirm/deny the reports, i'm not submitting the results to Science and Nature (sorry couldn't help myself).

This guy seems to have the low down on all the model differences:

No he doesn't, as for months on end he has said the CECHJ was 65nm RSX.

And that all 80GB's were 65nm RSX.

But recently he has upped and changed the results. Claiming for one, the first run of 80GB's CECHK were 90nm RSX.

Which means that is now a completely unreliable source to confirm.

Therefore I have suggested this very quick test of using the wattmeter to confirm.

I personally don't believe for one second the CECHK 80GB's are 90nm RSX. I don't have this version PS3, but I do have the CECHJ which I personally believe is 65nm RSX due to it running much cooler than my old CECHH.

Re: Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

Ok putting my money where my mouth is so to speak.

Idle (on the PS3's desktop or whatever its called), its using 91w-92 w (rapidly jumping between the two).

In Fifa 09, connected via HDMI, and at 720p this was during an actual footie game was 113w (bouncing between 110w - 116w, but for the majority on 113w, which is also an average so a fair number to say it was).

Watching a blu-ray movie: A Few Good Men, playback at 1080p was a constant 97w, when paused it was 96w .

Now can someone please do a comparison with their 80GB (non CECHK). And also older 40GB (CECHH, CECHG).

I have about 25 games so can easily stick in another game to test with, I just chose Fifa as I assumed the graphics use would be constant during a game of footie.

Re: Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

I'd be really interested in confirmation that the CECHK03 has a 65nm rsx.
I was waiting for DS3 and 65nm CPU+GPU before making the leap.

It would be good to compare the CECHJ/K/L/M

I heard that with with CECHK the heatpipe was removed to a heatsink - which implied a reduction from 90 to 65nm GPU.

This site has a view of motherboards - may help those in the know.

I would really like to know if the CECHK has the 65nm RSX

Was the CECHK ever confirmed to have 65nm or 90nm RSX? Maybe thats why my CECHK seems louder than everyone who says the PS3 is whisper quiet as its actually a 90nm RSX and not 65nm?

From what I have read the K version seems to have the 90nm RSX sadly. I still cant find any information regarding the L version, but the M's seem to be very quiet.

Bummer, I wish I had known that before I bought it. Can't really consider flogging it and getting an M, i'd lose way too much. It is a pain for blu-ray though, distracting, but only in very quiet scenes.

And very cool, in fact it's cold to the touch on the vent at the top (I have mine upright) and luke warm on the side (the underside for those laying flat) even during/after gaming and a massive difference when compared to my old CECHA which was quite hot at both the vent and the side

Its interesting that Benchy & TigerBlade seem to have bought theirs as Bluray bundles (with Batman Begins) and both have turned out to be M's - yet these models were released on 21st November 2008. StormyUK's must have been sitting in Sainsbury's for some time or older stock despite you buying it in Dec 08, or perhaps Sony put the Bluray bundles together with newer stock and are flogging the Ks on their own?

Mine came with the LBP bundle (or packaging). To be fair mine runs cool, doesn't even get warm and it hardly spits any heat out at all but I can hear the fan when there is no noise from the speakers in my quiet living room and thats from about 6-7ft.

Re: Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

Sainsburys stock would almost definitely been older stock. They order large amounts of console but find they are in the store room for months before being sold.

Buying a console in a bundle like the movie one i got will always certainly guarantee the latest console model. So when the Killzone 2 bundle (game in box) goes on sale next month, you'll have the latest model.

Mine is still fairly quiet. The disc drive is probably louder than the fans when it takes/ejects a disc. I wonder if they are using cheaper disc drives than the launch consoles

True about Killzone, although I wonder if Sony might have held stock back for it, I hope youre right though!

About the Bluray drive, I think they are almost certainly are using cheaper ones now. You know how it spins as you put the disc in now (whereas it doesnt with the 60GB)? Thats not a "new feature" its simply that the intake slot only has one motor pulling it in from one side, unlike the 60Gb which has two motors, one either side.

Just to add to the bundle theory (sorry !)
PS3 80G - movie bundle ( i am legend ) bought a couple of weeks ago.
Outer skin box states CECHL03.
Inner cardboard wrapper states CECHK03, as does the PS3 itself...
( it appeared too neatly packaged to have been opened beforehand )

Re: Anyone with a CECHL/CECHM 80GB PS3 & a Wattmeter?

I have a new PS3 (it's an cechm) and a wattmeter, will do a test when I'm not feeling so rank with this virus/bug/thing - need to dig out an extension lead so I can plug the wattmeter in as it won't fit in my 8 way power block.

I think I did this PS3 thing the opposite way round to most people - have been off work ill and bored out of my skull so on a whim ordered the PS3 from amazon (I tend to get a bit 'spendy' when I'm off work ill and stuck in the house). It came yesterday but haven't really felt much like playing games on it. At least I can watch some dvds and iplayer on it though.

I think mine had been open before hand, or seemed to be. Its an interesting point though. I am not sure what the LBP cover says with respect to the model as I have never really looked.

Thanks Fozzy.

To be accurate if you do the test with whatever game you have, hopefully I will have the same and redo mine again.

But doing it also with a 1080p blu-ray would be a help too.

Does anyone else who replied to the thread have a watt meter too?

If so can you possibly do the check too, as the more results would be helpful, we are only talking 10 mins of your time at most.

Plus the Watt meters can be had for £10 off ebay. The one I have is exactly the same make and model Maplins sell for £27, which I got for £10 from ebay. They really are handy things to have around the house, especially during the huge bills we are charged nowdays.

With regards to the noise of the console, as I say I have a CECHJ 40GB and it is almost totally silent.

When I say almost you would need to stick your ear right onto it in a silent room to even hear it.

It is much quieter than my Toshiba EP30 HD-DVD player.

I had a CECHH prior to this and this was much hotter runner, and was a bit noisier too. But people have said I may have just got a bad batch, or not.

Thats interesting. Was it a bundle package (ie with Bluray or game inside the PS3 box) or was it a PS3 on its own with game(s) added by Amazon?

The more I read about people having silent PS3s the more mine bugs me, do I have any recourse with Sony or will they just say tough, live with it, its normal?

I might try putting mine on its end which is supposed to help as at the moment its flat on a glass shelf under my TV although as I have said before it doesnt even get warm so I can't see airflow being an issue.

I believe I have read people have had their PS3s swapped due to an overly noisy fan.

But if I did it was some months ago so could be misremembering this. And I believe it was also for a refurbished console, not brand new.

Its certainly worth a telephone call to Sony PS3 support as it certainly can't hurt.

However if you have it on a glass shelf, could it not be just the vibrations onto the glass making the noise as opposed to the machine itself?

It was the standard PS3 80GB pack without a game (see piccy attached below). I paid £273.59 but got a choice of a free game with it - I got Little Big Planet but haven't played it yet. You were supposedly able to also get a free hdmi lead but that offer didn't seem to work (at least I couldn't get express delivery with it) and since I already have a hdmi lead knocking about and don't actually have a telly to use one with (I'm actually using the PS3 on a standard def telly... what a weirdo eh!?) I didn't bother with it.

Anthony - it will have to be with GTA4 or LBP as those are all I have, could download a demo though. Sorry but I can't do a blu-ray video test as I don't own any bluray discs, or a TV capable of viewing it. If I feel better later on this evening I might do a quick test, but possibly not... feel a bit iffy at the mo., need to go lay down for a bit I think.

Happy gaming. Catch you all in a while.

I'll check it out, I am sure it was just as noisy on the carpet as its the fan "wooosh" as opposed to another noise.

There is no hurry whatsoever, the thread was also started six weeks ago so its certainly not going any where it seems now.

Can I ask do you have the PS3 connected via HDMI, or do you have it connected via a SD connector?.

As this will probably affect the results, just thought I would ask with you mentioning about the TV and unable to watch Blu-Rays.

I have both GTAIV and LBP so this is no problem. On a side note if you want a recommendation on your next game I would definitely recommend Call of Duty WaW, totally addicted to it, as are many on the forum.
