A few questions about back ups and game saves.

Hi, I was thinking of getting rid of my 60GB PS3 and getting an 80GB instead.
I have a few questions because I want to save everything on my PS3 so that if I do get a new 80GB one I can quickly make things exactly the same as my current one.

1. What exactly does the "back up" utility do? Does it make an exact copy of everything on my PS3 (even downloaded and installed games from the Playstation Store)? So if I do a back up on the 60GB and then get a new 80GB PS3, all I need to do is restore the back up on the new 80GB PS3 and everything will be the same?

2. Can you just copy your game saves to a memory stick and then transfer them to a new PS3, rather than doing an entire back up?

3. Same as question 2 but regarding game data (i.e. downloaded patches for games)

4. Would I have to re-download and re-install all my games/demos/items from the Playstation store or are they included when you do a backup?

5. What would you guys suggest is the best/easiest/quickest way of putting a new PS3 in exactly the same state as my current one so that it has all my:
- game saves
- game data
- downloaded demos/games/items
- trophies
- themes
- settings
Hopefully it's just a matter of doing a backup and then restoring that backup on my new PS3...can it really be as simple as that?

Thanks in advance

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

If you have an external hdd big enough, then a backup will basically clone your ps3, settings, pictures, mp3's, game saves, everything.

Re downloaded games some may copy over, some may not - depends on the game. But these, as well as game installs / updates can be re-downloaded anyway so not a problem.

If you're using a flash drive and are limited in space to do the back up then you can delete the downloaded stuff, and anything in "game data utility" to get the backup size down. Again, you can just re-download / re-install that stuff.

Also, you could just copy game saves individually to a flash drive or similar, and copy over to the new machine.

Hope that helps

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

Brilliant, thanks very much
I think I might just put all my saves onto a memory stick, and then I can download everythin from the store/game updates again on my new PS3 (although it will probably take about 24 hours! Thank god my internet doesn't have a download limit!). It will also be pretty easy to put the settings back to how I had them too, so it's all good
Just one quick question....can I put all my game saves onto a memory stick at the same time (i.e. highlight them all and click copy) or do I have to put them on individually? And what is there file path (e.g folders) that I need to use when putting saves on a memory stick?
Thanks again

Individually....total ball ache if you have a load of games

Press triangle, copy to flash drive and the directory etc is sorted. Then on the new one just copy them back and it puts them in the right place.

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

Ok so think I am going to sell my 60GB soon and get the 80GB offer on amazon.co.uk as I can get loads of free stuff.
What would be the best way to sell it do you think? I can't really be bothered with ebay because them aswell as paypal take too much money off you.
How about the classifieds on this site? I've never used them before, is it a pretty simple process? I'm looking to get around £300 for it as that is how much they are going for on ebay....would anyone on here buy it for that much do you think?
Thanks in advance

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

Yeah i agree, it'd be better and easier to use backup and delete beforehand your downloaded games, anything in "game data utility", and anything else you can re-download etc.
That way you should be able to get the backup to fit on a flash drive, 8gb, 4gb, maybe even 2gb depending of course how much stuff you're backing up.
It's not just the settings it's handy for, but all your web browser bookmarks, themes etc, and as tigerblade said, individually copying game saves may take a while!

If you are going to advertise it on here I would offer the followiing advice, Read the Trading Rules, advertise it with a firm price, but be ready to consider offers, Pictures of the actual item always help, advertise it only when you're ready to sell it, and expect to be asked to send it prior to receiving payment as you dont yet have a trader rating, above all else, be totally honest with descriptions etc. visit your "for sale" thread regularly, Oh and budget for sending via a reputable insured courier if you have to send it.

This is a brilliant site for classifieds, with the rules structured towards both buyer and seller being happy.

Ps: I'm not interested, I have a 60 Gig

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

How do people pay if they buy off the classifieds? PayPal? If so does anyone know what percentage PayPal takes for themselves?
Also do you think £300 is a reasonable price to put it up on here for? Would it sell do you think?

Re: A few questions about back ups and game saves.

Yeah that's a reasonable asking price for a 60gb, they are generally quite sought after with the ps2 backwards compatibility and sacd support.

They pay by any means acceptable to both parties, Bank Transfer (BT) which can be done online or "over the counter" at a Branch of your bank, Paypal, (normally or as a gift), cash on collection, or cheque.

If memory serves me right I think Paypal may take 4%, but to be honest I'm not 100% sure on that, I think they take nothing if you pay it as a gift.

I would have thought £300 is somewhere around the right mark, there are those who wouldn't buy one because they know it will likely be out of warranty, and there are those who would buy one for its rarity (and backwards compatability).

The truth is, as always, its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
