Ps3 setup advice needed please
Hello there,
I will soon be acquiring a PS3 (the wife finally gave in) and I have been looking into setting it up with my current HD ready tv and home theatre system.
Here's what I've got to work with -
LG HD ready tv: One HDMI socket, no digital optical socket.
Philips DVD Home Theatre System: One HDMI socket, again no digital optical socket.
Both of the above have the different coloured audio sockets. (Sorry I'm not sure what they're officially called!!)
I currently have an HDMI lead connecting the TV to the DVD player thus I get an upscaled picture and 5.1 surround sound when we watch movies, etc.
Looking at the above can anyone out there advise me on the best way to get the most out of the PS3 both with the picture and the sound? I know it's limited but any advise would be really appreciated.
So far Currys, Comet and Bennetts have been baffled by this which is worrying.
I'm looking forward to any suggestions any one may have.
Cheers all.

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
I recon you need an amp,
If your HT system can act as an amp then....connect your PS3 via HDMI to your philips input then another hdmi from thr=e output to your TV
Hope this helps a little bit,i wouldnt be to up on component connections

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
Sounds like a plan, thank you.
Although, if I was to connect the PS3 to the Home Theatre kit via Hdmi and put another HDMI lead into the tv, what would i connect the latter to?

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
if you give us more details as to what model of ht system you have, we'll be able to work out what audio standards it supports and if it would be better ditching it or finding a standalone amp + seperate speakers

My set up is HDMI: PS3 to tv (For video)
Optical ouput: PS3 to reciever/cinema amp. For audio (Providing it has optical inputs)
Hope this helps

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
I'm afraid you are not going to like this but i think you will need a new home theatre set up to get the best out of the ps3.
Looking at the specs of that model i don't see how you could connect the PS3 other than by scart. It does not appear to have either component in or HDMI in.
Also the only option to connect the ps3 to it for audio would be analogue stereo connections.
This means you would have about the worst sound and picture combination going via the home theatre.
If you don't want to replace the HT system you could always connect the ps3 to the TV directly for picture and connect it to the analogue stereo inputs to at least give sound through all the speakers but you would not get proper surround sound that way. If the tv only has 1 hdmi in you would also need an hdmi switch.
All in all i would just explain that now that your wife has conceeded the need to get a ps3 she has to also conceed the need to hear/see it at it's best - and that means a new HT set up.
Good luck in selling that to her

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
You could try and get a component cable for your ps3 if your tv has component in (3 sockets coloured red, green & blue) which also has analog audio to connect to the aux in on your home theatre system. You won't get 5.1 dolby digital this way but you will still get lots of good noises
Alternatively connect your dvd using the scart and ps3 to hdmi (not a good plan . Only suggesting if funds are really limited)
Think someone has said get an hdmi switch.
Or how about a new telly with 2( or more) hdmi in?

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
Guys, thanks loads for the advice. In the back of my mind I knew there wasn't gonna be an all out superior solution but I will certainly try what has been suggested.
A mate of mine suggested an HDMI Splitter!! I think he may be away with the fairies with that suggestion - does anyone have any thoughts??

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
I had a phillips system, does yours have the red and white connectors for an aux input. I used these to get the sound from my sky box. There is a cable that you can use to connect your PS3 to these.

Re: Ps3 setup advice needed please
The hdmi on your home theatre system is output only, ie to tv. It would appear there are no inputs other than rca phono (red/white for right/left), so no 5.1 from your ps3 i'm afraid.
Best you'll get is 2ch stereo if you connect the tv's audio out to the home theatre system. There may be a dolby pro logic ii option, which'll make the 2ch stereo into a "virtual" surround effect.
As others have said to get the best from your ps3 an upgrade is required really!
