Moving files from PS3 to PC

OK, we all know PC > PS3 is easy.

How do i go about taking files off my PS3 HDD ? I've copied across some HD films, but I want to upgrade my PS3's HDD and i don't have the original HD sources anymore.

As they are bigger than 4GB i will presume that i cannot do a normal backup of the PS3 to an external HDD.

So is there any way i can copy from the PS3 back to my PC whilst i upgrade the internals ?

Take the HDD out and plug it into your PC via SATA?

Im guessing you should be able to see it just like any other drive, unless they have some strange encryption going on the drive.

Doesn't work.

The PS3 uses a file format that the PC doesn't recognise (unless you have some special software I suppose).

Even Partition Magic 8 couldn't see the format of a drive removed from the PS3 & put in a USB2 SATA housing.

I thought the PS3 just used FAT32 - guess not then im sure someone will come up with a little tool soon enough that will read it for us

Guess for now the only way is via the Media Backup?

No it can't use FAT32 as it accepts files larger than 4GB.

I can't do anything with the drive itself as i have a really old pc and it doesn't support SATA.

Looks like i'm stuck and will have to actually watch the films then delete, not too much of a hassle!

Are the files larger than 4GB? If not, why not just copy them to a USB hard drive or stick?

Stike that I just re-read your post.

Can't you use a web-based upload tool from the PS3 browser? Just a thought, not tried myself.

A quick search suggests it could be possible but not read the whole thread:

Re: Moving files from PS3 to PC

That's an interesting option. I can't see it working though if a PC can't even "see" the PS3 HDD over a network.

Also, and i'm sure most people are the same, it would take AGES to upload a 10GB file as mostly all ISP's offer paltry upload speeds.

Re: Moving files from PS3 to PC

To be honest i don't think there is a solution. I can't see how there would be seeing as the PS3 HDD is unreadable in it's current state.

Oh well, i'll just have to remember not to copy any more HD movies onto it for the time being!
