PS3 + HP w2207?

Hi guys. I've read through the FAQ plus the HP w2207 thread but have not found an answer for my question. I realize that there may not be one, but a member of this board informed me that there was but he no longer remembers where the thread was or what its title was; a search revealed nothing.

Anyway, I plan to purchase a PS3 with a HDMI-DVI cable and to use the cable to connect the PS3 to my HDCP-ready w2207 monitor (the model WITHOUT HDMI input). I've read a few threads that says it's doable, but the resulting resolution can only go up to 720p, which doesn't look that great on the w2207. However, the member that informed me of such a possibility said that it is possible to get 1080p resolution on the w2207, but he does not remember how exactly. So, does anyone recall what the solution was?

Thanks in advance!

Re: PS3 + HP w2207?

Hi there,

With a HDCP-compliant DVI input, your monitor will accept a protected digital signal from the PS3. All you need is an HDMI cable with DVI adapter, or a simple HDMI-to-DVI cable.

With its native resolution of 1680x1050, it can't display a true 1080p image. Some displays can accept a 1080p signal can scale it down, but the w2207 doesn't appear to be able to do this.

You will have to use 720p. This is definitely high enough resolution for a 22" screen, but there are two reasons why it might not look good:

1) the hardware scaling up to 1680x1050 is poor.
2) it is incapable of doing 16:9 aspect scaling.

From the thread at [H]ard|Forum, there are reports of this monitor stretching the 16:9 PS3 input to 16:10. A shame, but quite a common problem with monitors, especially on the cheaper TN panels.

Re: PS3 + HP w2207?

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for responding so late, but I thought I'd be emailed when someone replies...apparently not the case.

I guess I sort of knew that the ps3 wouldn't display 1080p on the 2207, but I was hoping that 720p would still look good enough on the w2207 for me to use it as a temporary display for my soon-to-arrive ps3...

Viewability of 720p on HP w2207 LCD?

Hi guys,

Planning to get a PS3 to connect to my HP w2207 (no HDMI) using a HDMI-DVI cable. I've been informed that my HP will not display 1080p through downscaling and will only display 720p at the most. My question is, how does 720p look on a 22inch lcd whose native resolution is 1680x1050? I'm not sure if the HP will maintain the 720p res (i.e. will not fill whole screen) or stretch it to 1680x1050 res...

Re: PS3 + HP w2207?

And I've already answered that question... ¬_¬

The monitor will display 720p at fullscreen with no black bars, meaning you will get a slight stretch vertically. In terms of image quality it should look fine, but the vertical stretch is not ideal.

Re: PS3 + HP w2207?

Hey,

I've just picked up the HP w2207h (HDMI) today and for what it's worth the PS3 detects the display as accepting a 1080p input from the PS3

I know the HP w2207 doesn't have HDMI but other than that i believe it is identical (please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong)

Picture looks great both gaming and Blu Ray's, an absolute bargain in my opinion £195 from John Lewis in the trafford centre, cheapest i have found it anywhere.

This thread *may* be of help to anybody looking into purchasing either the HP w2207 / w2207h for use with the PS3 or just as a normal PC display

Does your image look stretch?
