USB Hub To Use With The 40GB PS3 ?

Is it possible to get a USB adaptor to increase the number of USB ports available for use on the 40Gb PS3 ?

Cheers

Re: USB Adaptor

Some of the vertical stands come with USB hubs built in to them to increase the number of USB ports, so I presume you could just plug in a USB hub and it would work

Re: USB Adaptor

Just get yourself a USB hub, you can pick a 4 port one up for around £10.

Re: USB Adaptor

Get a powered hub. A passive one might run into problems if it has too many things that derive their power from the port plugged in.

Re: USB Adaptor

Can anyone recommend a powered hub that's been tried & tested, & that doesn't cost a fortune?

Cheers.

It'll be fine. The hub should be transparent to the PS3.

No worries Moogle

When you say 'transparent' to the PS3, what exactly do you mean ?

He means that the ps3 will not and does not need to know about it as no software is required to run USB hubs

Sweet - thanx everyone.

Now the task to find a reasonably priced (black) one that is externally powered ...

Looks spot on fella - thanx very much

Should go well with my PS3 - don't need any more than 5 ports I don't think

40Gb PS3 only 2 USB ports can you add more?

Hi all,

As the 40gb PS3 only has 2 USB I have a simple question about the PS3's usb ports. On a pc I am sure that you can add extra usb ports on a lead. sort of like a multi extention lead.

Will this work with a PS3?

What would I really need on a PS3 that would use up both ports?

I assume I can use 2x controllers and a keyboard on the Bluetooth. So I can only assume I would need one port for an external USB HDD (If I needed it). What else?

Cheers

Yes, you can attach a USB hub to get more ports. I have an external HDD, wireless keyboard dongle, memory stick and infrared receiver (so I can use my AV system remote) on mine with a hole spare ready for Play TV.

Re: 40Gb PS3 only 2 USB ports can you add more?

USB hubs are very cheap now too.

I happened to see a 4 port Belkin one for £12 in PC World the other day and as I wasn't looking for one, I'm sure you could probably find them cheaper than that.

I use a four port powered hub with mine - no problems.

Strongly recommend getting a powered hub, as opposed to passive.

Re: 40Gb PS3 only 2 USB ports can you add more?

Thats great guys ... usb hub.. thats the bunny. I was damned if I could remember the name for it

So the only real negative between the 40gb and 60gb PS3 is that the 40gb will not play PS2 games. Card readers can be installed on USB hubs. And a hub will make more usb ports availible if needed.

Thanks for the quick replies. Looks like a PS3 is going to replace my HTPC now that the format war is over.

Maybe we could all do a little search online for a neat looking & compact powered USB hub, that would compliment our PS3's - then post our results in here

At a quick glance, this seems a tidy little unit ....

USB 2.0 4 Port POWERED Hub Inc. PSU

EDIT: Just to be clear, this is now a merged thread and my replies were to an original post which is now #16

technically it will still know about it, all USB devices are supposed to report their presence as a minimum, if you connected a hub to a pc/mac you'd see it in the device manager/system info as a hub, and even what the device chain looks like. Power requirements and speed are two of the things that are reported by the device to the source. Windows uses these features to tell you that a device would perform better if you plugged it into USB 2.0 port.

but as far as users are concerned, it wouldn't matter. i'd echo a powered one though, means you can charge your remotes/GHIII battery packs without having the console on.

As long as you have a free power socket to plug it in to. That is becoming more and more of a problem with the number of things located together than need power.

Re: USB Hub To Use With The 40GB PS3 ?

I've got one I got from Poundland(!)

I will try that if I need one before jumping in and getting a new one.

I'd imagine Play TV wouldn't like going through a hub, may mess up my recordings
