PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

Need some suggestions

I want to upgrade my PS3 HDD, after some research

Option 1:

Seagate Momentus 7200.2 G-Force 160GB ST9160823ASG 2.5" 7200RPM SATA 8MB Cache HDD

It is new, and it powerful, both of the G-force version and non-G-Force version is near 100 quids. It is pricy, but the performance is attractive.

Option 2:

Western Digital Scorpio 250GB WD2500BEVS SATA 2.5" 8MB Cache HDD

WD is a good brand, and this HDD is HUGE!!! near 120 quids

Option 3:

Fujitsu 160GB MHW2160BH 5400RPM 2.5" SATA 8MB Cache HDD

160G, only 50 quids, but, 5400 RPM...

What do you think?

Thanks

i'd go for the Fujitsu, seeing as we don't know if the PS3 can use the faster speeds.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

1up.com put an article how to change the PS3 HHD, and they use the Seagate one.

Some people have tried the WD one, and it works fine.

And that's the exact reason I am asking... anyone has any idea about them? Thanks. the huge 250GB is very tasty...

If it were me, I'd be looking at some sort of NAS solution rather than try to stuff as much storage physically into the PS3 as poss.

For £200, I installed 1.2TB of storage (with RAID card so effectively I have 800GB of redundant storage) in a PC I am using as a home server and share it out to the PS3 and various other machines.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

i myself was looking at bigger cap HD's..until i ran into some money problems lol

My personal advice would be to get a 5400rpm model...which is currently what the PS3 runs...4200rpm would be too slow..and 7200rpm may cause more noise or heat in the ps3..and from reading around there is not much advantage it has over 5400rpm models between the two

The ones i ahd i mind were: Seagate Momentus 5400.3 5400rpm 160gb, Samsung hm250ji 250gb and wd scoprio 250gb.

but make sure to check out toms hardware guide..it has comparisons on the performance on hard drives..although i don't know/think its all too relevent with the PS3

What NAS did you get? I like the idea of having RAID1 on it, but haven't found any that support it.

From the sounds of it he just has ample storage slapped in a PC and then pimps it out, alternatively you can buy NAS boxes with removeable hard drive bays that have SATA2 RAID 5, so you can basically have hot swappable drives that recreate data using parity info on the fly should a drive crap out...I love RAID 5

Do'h! I didn't read it properly...

I'm looking to either upgrade my current HTPC HDDs or get a NAS solution which supports RAID1 and gigabit ethernet for connection to a PS3. My gf will hate the fact that I have to power up the HTPC to watch/listen to anything.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

Jim Fear is correct - I already had a Win2003 server running 24/7 in my attic so it was just a simple job to add lots of disk storage into it.

If I hadn't already got that setup, I would be looking at some sort of simple NAS solution instead.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

I got the WD 250G HDD today and put it into my PS3. Everything is fine.

The only problem I had is the screws are so tight that I almost broke it...

Here is the picture of the screen of my PS3 with massive 250GB ... well, to be exact, 232 GB

If you install a new drive in your PS3 what is best way of copying the existing 60GB drive to your new one?

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

use the backup utility transfer your data to a third storage, such as a external HDD or big memory card or flash drive. Then restore the data from it, after you replace the new HDD.

As for me, a 2G flashdrive was enough. Most of the useful data is game saving file. Make sure uninstall the PS3 game data before the backup, because you can install the game again on the new HDD anyway.

The only thing is that you have to backup the previous data to a third (large) storage, change the HDD, then restore the data. If your backup storage is not big enough, PS3 will tell you. You can either delete something such as the game data (you can install it again later), or some useless free HD game video, or, use a bigger storage.

The FW will not be affect at all. As for me, it is still 1.82 - even you reset the PS3, the FW will not be changed either.

There is no big risk for changing the HDD because sony officially support this. It is not a hack or personal DIY routine.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

You can backup EVERYTHING, as long as you have a big enough external drive to hold it. For example if your ps3 is 60G, a 60G external harddrive will definitely hold the backup.

But still, that's a lot of data.

I think changing the HDD at very early stage after you bought a PS3 should be more convenient.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

Hi

I've connected my external Maxtor drive via USB to the PS3 and it does not apear to recognise it. What external drives are people using to do a backup?

Thanks

So you can not see the extra icon in video or music option? That's strange because most of the external drivers or flash memory pens can be recogized by PS3.

How has the drive been formated FAT32 or NTFS??

PS3 needs the drive format to be FAT32 otherwise it won't recognise it.

Re: PS3 HDD upgrade: WD 250G or SG 160G?

Oh yes, make sure that your drivers is formated in FAT32. And by the way, a single partition more than 32GB will not be able to bulit in FAT32 by windows format program. However, you can use some other software to create a patition in FAT32 more than 32 GB.

» CompuApps SwissKnife

I used this program to make a 60GB HDD into a single partition, without any problem.

It was NTFS so converted it using PQ magic, backed up no problems.
