cant borrow game - is it rubbish

Someone just came up to me saying games have a code that lock it to your hard drive - therefore you cannot borrow or lend games as 'the code' will not match.

Just wondered if it definitely was rubbish or if rental games etc. will need to be specially made.

That was a rumour going round before the ps3 launched, this is not the case now though...

As has been said it was something they were thinking about doing but gave up on it years ago.

Re: cant borrow game - is it rubbish

Think about it, how would the game disc know to only play on your PS3? Unless the DVD is a Blu-ray writer drive, then that would be physically impossible. The game disc would be read only I presume meaning there was no way of writing a code to it to lock it to a PS3.

Plus there enough bad things Sony have done, lets give them a chance that they aren't stupid enough to have done this aswell.

Re: cant borrow game - is it rubbish

There was talk of the doing this but it looks like they decided against implementing it.

The only way they could make that work is if the game was played on a net enable ps3 and once played the game registered with their server with the ps3 serial number it had been played on. Then if it was played on another net enabled ps3 it could stop the game being played.

They talking about implementing this as the second hand game and rental market really winds Sony up. It basically means they sell less new games as the second hand copies are recirculated at lower prices. They see this as lost sales on their part with the retailers making money multiple times of games with non of the money going back to Sony.

Guess what thats the way a free market works !

Sony came under massive pressure from retailers in the states to drop all talk of this (The second hand game market over there is HUGE) and it would have really p***** off users if they couldnt sell there games when they finished with them.

It was another case of unbelivable arrogance by Sony, thankfully it looks like they gave up on the idea....

This concept already exists on the pc, with installations keys that can only be used once for online play. However p.c games are much cheaper than console games I hope it never shows up in the console market as it would really harm game sales.
