how is online gaming on the PS3 compared to xbox live?

I use to like the live interface and the league ladders (I was number1 on bankshot billiards 9 ball, infact people who are still on live tell me i still have the best true skill:P)

is it asgood or better or worse

Live and PSN are wildly different for two reasons:

1. The unified services provided by MS are better.

2. MS sets higher standards.

For number 1, above, think voice chat, friends list, messaging, invites and so on. A comprehensive set of features available to everyone at all times. Developers don't need to worry about any of it.

Frankly, Sony is playing catch-up in all areas (at least I hope they are -- I am not convinced Home will add to any of the above).

Leaderboards are an example of number 2 at work. MS dictates that all games must necessarily include leaderboards. Hence there will always be leaderboards.

In stark contrast, Sony has seemingly set no standards. Even the new 'Trophies' are optional, meaning some games will have them, others won't.

With PSN, developers can do as much or as little as they please, hence there will always be games like COD3 (no voice chat) and Virtua Tennis 3 (no online at all).

Re: quick question

i think the actual gaming is better, ive never had lag or anything like that, and also i can 'surf' the net on my pc while playing motorstorm online, which is something i cant do on xbox live!

though the stor on the ps3 is pretty dam awful! no were near as good as the marketplace!

gaming 10/10
stor 4/10
internet on ps3 8/10 (if it wasnt for the 'plugin' screen that appears everytime u go on differernt websites it would be much better!

Re: quick question

I find it to be nowhere near as good as LIVE . It is the one thing that is really putting me off the PS3 . And is the number one reason why I may well sell it.

I have 3 online games.MLB2K7 , R:FOM and Motorstorm. In all the games I have played I have yet to actually talk to anyone online.if someone sends you a message, you have to quit the game and go back to the dash (or whatever Sony call it) to read it.You cannot chat to someone who is playing a different game. You cannot do cross game invites . If Im not mistaken your friends list is not universal, so a friend on the dash, would not automatically be on your friends list in ,say R:FOM.

The only thing it has going for it IMO is that it is free but to be perfectly honest I would rather pay and have a decent service.

Got to agree with everything there apart from the store. It's much simpler than the 360 marketplace, but that's what I like about it. With the marketplace there seems to be a lot more clicks before you get what you want. And I hated the blades on the 360, a nice novelty at first but there's only so much tearing and juddering I can handle.

Was playing Resistance the other night with about 25+ players with zero lag. Amazing when you consider that I got lag on my 360 with 8 players.

Resistance online is really good fun by the way. Reminds me a lot of Halo 2 online with twice the amount of players, but that's no bad thing.
