Live and PSN are wildly different for two reasons:
1. The unified services provided by MS are better.
2. MS sets higher standards.
For number 1, above, think voice chat, friends list, messaging, invites and so on. A comprehensive set of features available to everyone at all times. Developers don't need to worry about any of it.
Frankly, Sony is playing catch-up in all areas (at least I hope they are -- I am not convinced Home will add to any of the above).
Leaderboards are an example of number 2 at work. MS dictates that all games must necessarily include leaderboards. Hence there will always be leaderboards.
In stark contrast, Sony has seemingly set no standards. Even the new 'Trophies' are optional, meaning some games will have them, others won't.
With PSN, developers can do as much or as little as they please, hence there will always be games like COD3 (no voice chat) and Virtua Tennis 3 (no online at all).
