Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

Well he's half right, everyone gets away with charging us more than anyone else. Sony are just following suit They obviously know amercians won't pay high prices, and they would never want to upset the fellow japanese so lets do the uk over

Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

Whilst his point is perhaps technically correct, higher prices because of higher pay etc, its the way he puts it. Cheaper people? WTH?

Sony execs should not be allowed to speak in public.

Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

I can buy the bit about European taxes being higher than they are equivalently with the US, but even without VAT, the UK PS3 is still significantly more expensive than the American version pound for dollar.

Part of that is down to having to set a slightly higher price here to keep up with currency fluctuations, but the volume argument doesn't hold either, europe is a bigger market than the US so economies of scale should mean it cheaper in Europe.

Also the product we're getting is cheaper to produce than the US version.

So we're being stuffed several times.

To be honest Sony are making an extra buck at European's expense. You can't blame them, if we pay for it, it's a valid market price. But still it's a bit cynical, and from a company already with a rep for its cynicism it's not going to win itself back any customer loyalty it once had.

Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

I dont think that they are deliberatly setting the price higher just for the fun of it. They clearly think we will pay that higher price. Its not as if they are making money from the PS3 hardware. I also think what he meant about the US being bigger and cheaper is that it is easier to distribute a product in the US, less red tape, easier transportation, only one set of mass retailers to deal with.

Again its the way he says it. It sounds like a 13 year old trying to explain why his lemonade is more expensive on one street than another.

Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

Also this bit taken from the full article

But GBP 425 seems like an odd number. Did you think about pricing the PS3 at GBP 399 which would have a different feel to it, psychologically?

No. We did consider GBP 429, but we wanted to get the best for the consumer.

Come on, what the hell is up with this guy? Why cant sony appoint people who are gamers and understand the industry?

If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive - consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK - a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more.
Sony just need to keep their stupid mouths shut and let their hardware do the talking. Everyword that comes out of their mouths is a PR disaster these days....

They obviously have nothing sensible or constructive to say so why say anything at all ?

Sony is selling something that costs them 750 Euros for 600 Euros. Nintendo is selling something that costs them 150 Euro for 199 Euro while MS sells something that costs them 300 Euro for 350 Euro.

What exactly do you want them to do? They already are losing 150 Euros per unit.

And he was correct - Europeans pay more for everything due to complicated market and much higher everything.

You guys in UK pay a lot more for cars than americans do, as with everything else as well.

Us in eastern europe have it even worse...

We arent complaining about the price in this thread. Just about the way this Sony exec is trying to explain it. Perhaps its a language issue. Basically the guy doesnt seem to know what he is talking about.

Re: Further Sony Exec Madness

I did like the line about the UK being a 'disproportionately successful little island'.

Geeez is that a compliment, a dig, or a plea to get out of the place! :-)

Honestly I'm sure that Iranian president will be looking for a new job soon, he's done wonders marketing Iran as a lovely place, judging from their current performance he'd be a step up for Sony...
