External HD for my new PS3

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has got, or thinking of buying an external usb hard drive to go with their PS3?

Am looking into getting one but not sure what to go for. The passport ones look great but unsure about reliability etc.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Can then transfer my music etc to my PS3 for an all in one experience

Re: External HD for my new PS3

Any will do, just remember it needs to be formatted in FAT32 to work. I swapped my internal drive for 120gb and it rocks!

I can recommend the Western Digital "MyBook" drives. They come in sizes up to 500GB, are practically silent in operation and sport a cool circular ring of LED's on the front that display drive activity and remaining space. I bought a white one to match my 360 but they come in matt black too.

Re: External HD for my new PS3

Am I correct in saying that the max HDD you can buy for the PS3 is 120GB, once every thing is loaded back on its more like 114GB?

If so I may just buy another 750GB external HDD until the size of theses HDD’s are increased.

Re: External HD for my new PS3

Is it true then that you can only put in your own HDD that is the exact same workings as the original 60GB one? And that the only one currently goes upto 120GB?

If that is the case, you might as well wait until the original one gets filled up, and then see where technology is with these small HDD?

You can get 200GB now and 300GB should be available (but nobody's selling them yet - I think they're all going to laptop manufacturers).

Re: External HD for my new PS3

Sorry about duncey question, but if I get an external hard drive and format it to FAT32, will it be readily transferrabel between a laptop running XP and the PS3? (Cos the laptop uses NTFS as standard)

Re: External HD for my new PS3

I dont think this fat 32 business is right ? I have ntfc formated memory sticks working fine between the pc and ps3.

NT based Windows (2000/XP/2003) will only let you format FAT32 partitions up to 32GB, you have to mess around with custom formating tools to format drives above that I think.

I am sure external drive wise the ps3 will read ntfs formated drives

Re: External HD for my new PS3

What are you going to use to format it fat 32 ? Can the ps3 read more than one logical drive ?

The PS3 can read NTFS but looks like it uses FAT32

I have a 160 gig in FAT32 for my removable caddy formated with my NTFS XP
