PS3 internet browser security

As the PS3 has an internet browser facility what will Sony do to make sure the units do not get affected by a virus/worm? Load some kind of anti-virus? OK MS explorer is hit all the time due to the amount of users it has (most popular web browser) but surely some "teenage" hacker will try a PS3 at some stage? Most problems occur when people visit "dodgey" websites.

What are your views? Will a PS3 not be affected by viruses etc like a PC?

Don't get me wrong my PS3 will not replace my PC for web browsing but it would be very handy if I just wanted to view a site for a second, instead of loading up my PC (which can take 3-5mins).

Also can we download stuff to the PS3 - i.e ITUNES, Porn and film trailers?? I am trying to think how I will use my 60 gig HDD.

Cheers

I think the browser is very secure, as for downloads, you can download youtube video's etc, i even use it to check my ebay account because i know its secure, Lets put it this way, it will take someone years to crack a code thats totally new and unique only to one type of unit aka the playstation 3, i wouldnt even see much point in creating a virus for it anyway, with the amount of updates, it wouldnt last long, also the operating system isnt installed on the hdd, its installed on a ram chip

Er... you'd need the iTunes software to do that, and unless Apple suddenly decide they're going to create version of iTunes specifically for the PS3 (not likely), I'd go with an answer of no.

OK forget Itunes.

So we can view anything on the net via the PS3?

A quick search brought up this article.

As the PS3 can run linux does this mean you could run itunes on it?

In theory, yes (assuming you can be bothered to go through the rigmorole of installing Linux, CrossOver Office etc), although how well it works in anyone's guess, but that wasn't really what the OP was asking about.

Re: PS3 internet browser security

i got hacked tonight - i watched iplayer on my ps3 through the browser for the first time, then i switched my laptop on and my details were stolen from a word file and my laptop was operated remotely by someone and they shut down all my ports - network card slots, usb slots, and disabled my built-in modem.
i managed to rush over my sister's house in order to change all my passwords - my ebay, paypal and lovefilm passwords had already been changed by the hackers. i managed to get my ebay and paypal accounts back under my control but still don't have access to lovefilm, until i ring them in the morning...
now, i'm very finickity when it comes to internet safety and i've never been hacked in 20 years of computing... until i decided to watch a 1 hour programme via my ps3 browser tonight, so i would say, yes, teenage hackers can get in quite easily. make sure your router is firewalled - i thought mine was but it didn't stop me from being attacked by hackers.
you have been warned!!!

Sounds a bit dodgy, that's never happened to anyone else AFAIK, and this is your first post...

Nothing to do with your PS3. Especially via iplayer!

Sounds like someone has downloaded a Trojan or something on a pc in your network....AFAIK there is no way in hell all that can be done via a PS3.

No danger that was related to watching the iPlayer on your PS3. Stop downloading so much porn on your laptop.

Spot the troll or 360 user.

Quite funny though if you think they got to a word file on a laptop from looking at the BBC on the PS3.

What a coincidence, first post an all! I very much doubt it was his ps3, more like his laptop! if people could do this we would have heard loads!

I watch iplayer all the time, am posting now and use my ps3 for just about everything i do on net and been doing it for over 2 years! ! ( haven't got p.c, live in shared house with mate who has though)

Re: PS3 internet browser security

ok, i feel a bit of a fool now...
thanks for all the lovely comments - and yes i am new to ps3!
after going over everything that's happened it would appear that my hacking problems were caused by a) an old wireless router with a **** (non-existent firewall) and b) an older version of firefox - have now updated to 3.5.
so i hold my hands up and will say i was mistaken - i was just feeling indignant at the time... bloody hackers!
you'll all be pleased to know that i have come up with a new system of remembering passwords and have dispensed with my word file...
(my god, i feel like at my first day at school..)
