HDTV Sharpness Setting

I have been reading that sharpness can affect HD PQ if using to much what setting do you guys use for your TV.

I hear 0 is best for best PQ.

Lowest possible is best, as sharpness actually makes things look blurry! On some tv's 0 is the best setting, on others it'll be 1-10 out of 100.

If you can find a dvd menu with black writing on a bright background it'll show it quite well - high sharpness will look horrible, turn it down until the letters look nice to you.

in the LCD forum thread for my TV someone recommended 0 Sharpness for Xbox 360 do you think same would apply for PS3. Has there both HD gaming consoles.

Some TVs have their zero point for sharpness at the middle of the scale so worth checking your TV's forum to find where no enhancement / softnening is applied.

Depends on the TV. Download the AVS HD test patterns and pdf manual. There's at least one pattern that you can use to check if anything unwanted is being introduced with the sharpness control.

Here's the link to the page. You need to register to download. The pdf manual is also downloaded from the same page.

Can't remember off the top of my head which pattern it was but it tells you in the manual. It's also the one to check overscan. There's no direct link to a particular pattern.

I tried my sharpness setting at 0 &10 picture is a lot clearer then orginal 50 setting

but not sure whether to choose 0 or 10 maybe use guys can help

On 0 when looking at folders on the xmb the folders kind of blend in with the xmb of some sort but on 10 setting the folders go brighter and dont blend in as much.

what would be better

Sounds like it's doing edge enhancement even at 10%. I'd turn it off but they're your eyes

theoretically, IMO, "0" is the setting for artificial sharpness(as let's be honest, it IS artificial) to be OFF.
Give it a couple of days, and i bet you won't notice it, and other settings will look false.

yeah at 10 the folder is brighter and kinds of as a shadow (as it doesn't blend in with XMB) guess is what you could call it.

I will test it at 0 for a few days as that what I was recommend for my 360 settings

Well, 0 is OFF, and everything else is On, but at a gradiated scale, so 10 maybe is still ok, with slight enhancement(if you want to call it an enhancement), but 50 is wrecking the picture..you get my drift.
Ideally you want it as low as it goes, and IMO, 0 is the best place to leave it.

It may look weird to look at first, but you will soon get used to it.

yeah I guess I just need to get used to it has I have been on the other setting and got used it.

I have decided go with 0 and see how I get on with it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the sharpness controll was only for use on the NTSC broadcast standard and that for PAL and SECAM it should be set at zero.

It does depend on the TV. Certainly for most it's 0 but there are a few TV's out there where 'neutrality' is set somewhere other than 0

I don't think that's correct but it's definitely a matter of taste with SD material

Neutral is 50 on a 0 - 100 scale on my LG LH3000 (47 inch jobbie). Going lower that 50 artifically blurs everything.

That's LG though, you switch it on, and it gets blurry, or wavy, or retentive..

Not sure what the sarcasm is for

LG isn't the only example either.

The "Basic Settings" mp4 from the AVS HD 709 download has the sharpness test, last image in the video I think.

For most sets its going to be 0, be careful that when you lower it to 0 you dont think its artificially blurring when actually thats how its supposed to look with no enhancement

It's the natural setting for my set...may not be the same for all LG's!

Sharpness:
For viewing test patterns at least, the lowest possible sharpness setting you can get on all of your equipment is usually the best. Sharpness generally adds edge enhancement and noise which can in the end diminish the 3D effect and overall quality of a properly calibrated video system. Use it to taste, but try to see if you can live without it for awhile and see if you don't find the overall image better without it.

From Digital video Essentials

Here's how to calibrate your display very quickly with Avia.
First adjust all "sharpness"" settings on TV and DVD player to "off" or the lowest level.

And the same from Avia

Hi Rock, no I don't think that woulg help much, I picked up a copy of DVE for a tenner on e-bay and used that to calibrate each input on my TV. Takes a bit of time but well worth it for PQ.
