Exclamation Leap Year Glitch **Fixed**

Tried to sign into the PSN and get an error 8001050F.
I have a Japanese launch 60GB PS3 (with upgraded hard drive).

The system date shows as 31/12, and a lot of my themes are showing as corrupted data.
My trophies appear to be OK, all of them inc. Dante's Inferno show what I've earned so far.

All my other data appears to be OK so I've deleted the corrupt themes. The PS3 was OK earlier tonight so it must be related to the rollover into 1st March.

Fixed the date and still the same. I was not signed into the PSN at all tonight.

More info here

Same error code here was fine on Sunday then it crossed over to Monday and I've been unable to log in since. Mine is a 40GB Phat. Will try again tomorrow (edit mean today, oh Im off to bed lol) it's most likely a PSN server issue, eerr I hope.

Yep i have the exact same problem. Must be psn at fault. Bit of a worry that a psn fault can corrupt data on our hdd though (if it was actually corrupted).

If it's not psn then a virus is the next most plausible explanation... Hmm...

supposedly somebody hacked into the psn servers and screwed all us fat ps3 owners over, i called sony and told me the effects may be irreversable.... ie all my trophies are gone for good and i cant play 80% of ps3 games.
hope thats not true tough.

There's a big thread about this on NeoGAF. It's advisable not to even attempt to connect to PSN if you've got an older "fatty".

It looks like this could be some kind of date bug in the firmware, because people that haven't even connected to PSN at all are finding that the date is showing as incorrect. It is definitely not someone hacking PSN, as obviously that wouldn't affect offline users.

After reading more info, the best advice seems to be to not turn your PS3 on at all for the time being if you have an older fat model.

It seems that when the date rolled over to March 1st, for some reason the PS3 thinks it's December 31st 1999. If you are connected to PSN this will cause synchronisation issues which messes up your trophies and any downloadable content protected by DRM (i.e. almost all of it) which in turn can make games unplayable, even offline. I guess all PS3s use GMT +/- a few hours depending on the country, which is why people in the US are affected even though it's not March 1st there yet. That's what I can gather from the info that's been posted elsewhere anyway. It may or may not be correct, but I'd still leave your PS3 off until there's word from Sony about a fix. Better safe than sorry!

Was playing MW2 when my internet froze for a second, but on trying to sign back in all I am getting is that 8001050F error.

Tried resetting router, PS3 no joy.

My PS3 date has also abruptly went back to 31st December 1999 (how I wish it was then).

Seems its a widespread problem today only affecting the phats.

And Sony are working on it

Twitter / Sony PlayStation: We're aware that many of y ...

More info from NeoGAF. Again, this isn't 100% confirmed as the cause, but it seems the most likely considering it's affecting people that have never even connected to PSN or hooked their PS3s up online.

Everyone READ THIS PLEASE.

Here's what's going on right now: something with the PS3's internal clock has borked in some pre-slim models. This is not a PSN issue; it has to do with your PS3's clock. This clock is NOT related to the OS clock. It seems to be a leap year bug. Setting your clock ahead will do nothing. All PS3s around the world were affected at the exact same time.

Does this affect me?

-If you have a Slim PS3, you're good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a "fat" PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.

What does this bug mean?

-If affected, your date and time has been set to a random past date. This prevents you from signing into PSN, playing any PSN games, or using any DLC. Your trophies will also not display correctly or be able to sync.

How do I fix it?

-You can't. Even if you don't sign into PSN, it won't help. This is a hardware issue.

So, what do I do?

-Wait 24 hours. Other products that have had similar bugs have corrected themselves after the "bugged" day. On Monday around 6pm central time, all PS3s will automatically correct themselves...maybe.

-If that doesn't work, we'll need a firmware update from Sony, which should be a pretty important priority for them right now.

Did I lose my data/themes/etc?

Your save data/games/dlc/themes are fine. They'll be fixed when the PS3 is fixed. Trophies are uncertain right now, but they'll be fine if you've synced them before the PS3 was bugged. Unsynced trophies are an unknown right now.

If I have a bugged PS3, can I still use it?

It's probably not a good idea, as I have no idea what will happen to the trophies you earn during the bugged time. Movies/media will work fine.

So there ya go, my handy FAQ.
So yeah, take that with a pinch of salt. Hopefully Sony will fix this quickly and painlessly, or it'll just work itself out when 24 hours passes.

Me too. Not sure what I'll do when get home and waiting for rest of house to get up so I can then go to bed!

Any update yet? Can't look on the twitter link from work, gets blocked! Really hope no-one loses all their trophies or any data from all this. Bit early to panic I know but what a disaster this'll be if it's a total failure that doesn't reset when date changes again or whatever. Expensive for Sony if results in a recall as can't sign in for update or whatever.....

Poor effort there Sony... Maybe it's another attempt to make us all switch to slims so we cant hack phats via Other OS

I was playing till about 2300 hours last night, offline, and turned it off to go to bed. No playing for me today then until there's some word if a later date/time will reset it. Hopefully unsynced trophies arent corrupt, i'd just got the Platinum for Fallout 3...

Gonna be intersting to see how sony fix this, like has been mentioned above if you cant get onto psn then how can u get the firmware update apart from putting it onto usb which is ok for most people on here but im guessing alot of people may not have a usb stick to hand or even know how to do things like that...

Turned my phat on this morning for a quick go of MW2 before work, not working. Same error messages and incorrect date, can't sign into PSN.
Am using web browser right now to type this so that's working, internet connection test just fails on testing for PSN.

Well funny enough before coming on here I put my ps3 on to get some more of Heavy Rain done. Got the message about unable to login and game failing to start because of sync failure. Then I tried iplayer to see if it was a problem with psn or a internet connection failure and it went to iplayer and played content fine.

It seems that whether this affects you or not may depend on the hardware revision. I just read elsewhere that someone with an 80 GB unit (model CECHL) had no issues, so I thought I'd try mine as it's also an 80 GB CECHL and it works just fine. CECHK and earlier appear to be the affected units, although whether you want to risk turning your console on or not is up to you. You can find out which hardware revision you have by looking at the serial number on the label on the back of the console.

EDIT - 2 other users on NeoGAF have also confirmed that their CECHL system works fine.

If the internet is still up on the PS3 regardless of PSN not working we might be able to do a system update if they find a fix.
So by the sound of it all 60GB/40GB are currently bricks for playing games.
