Question ps3 games in 1080i

i've just got a new ps3 slim connected via hdmi to a sony 32" lcd.

noticed when accessing the main ps3 menu, the tv shows 1080i. when playing games, the tv only shows the games at 720p.

is this normal?

Yep, most games native resolutions (what they're actually MADE in) is 720p, and then they can be upscaled etc. Some people force the PS3 to output in 1080i/p, but others believe the best results will come at the resolution that the game was designed for. It's your call, try both and see, but it's nothing to worry about!

Does your TV support 1080p? Most games only support 720p check the back of the game case to see what resolutions it supports.

thenka for the replies.

on the ps3, i've gone into the display settings > hdmi, selected automatic and 'maximum resolution 1080i' is shown.

assassins creed II and need for speed shift are the only 2 games i have. assassins creed shows 720p, 1080i and 1080p on the rear of the box. need for speed shift shows just 720p.

when playing both games the tv only shows 720p.

If that is the case I assume your TV is HD ready and not full HD, 720p therefore would be the correct resolution.

No HD ready TVs support 1080i or 720p, you can force the PS3 to output to 1080i if you want but I would stick with 720p.
