Sony PS3 warranty - is it really that bad?

hi all

bought myself a ps3 slim 250gb today at gamestation. They were trying to sell me their warranty for £35 for 2yrs cover. They were saying the sony warranty is worthless and ps3 is known to go wrong with repair costs/courier costs being charged.

I suspect they maybe feeding me a load of crap but has anyone had any experience of ps3 waranty?
Is it worth getting the cover from gamestation? Is the ps3 known to go wrong alot?

cheers

Up to a year its fine - they will replace/repair for free no problems. After the year your pretty much on your own.

I have a 60gb Original model and have never had any problems what so ever. My friend had an issue with his and it was in theory outside the year warranty period and they fixed it for free anyway.

Sounds like they are just trying it on to get you to part with some more cash on something you dont need.

A shop, trying to get you to part with more money by using shifty sales techniques. Nooo, surely not.

For the first 12 months, if it goes faulty, you don't even have to deal with Sony anyway. You just take it back to the shop you bought it from & they legally have to replace it, repair it, or refund you your money.

After the 12 months are up it seems to be up to the Sony customer service wether they are in a good mood or not. Although you could potentially go back to the shop & quote the Sales of Goods Act, but that's another long winded conversation altogether.

Sony are brilliant within warranty, and brilliant when it comes to their own faults. For instance, there was an update a while ago that screwed a lot of peoples bluray drives, Sony just replaced the faulty ones even outside of warranty.

If it breaks outside of warranty and under your own use, then they are more than happy to make you pay half the RRP for a repair.

£35 for 2 years is a bit steep though, currys gave me 3 years for £35.

After my 60Gb died (YLOD) at age 2 years 7 months, I replaced it with a 250Gb at HMV. Went for their extended warranty for £25. First year is manufacturer, then there is 2 years with HMV, so 3 years in total. As it would have cost £128 to get a refurb 60Gb I thought it wasn't a bad deal. Covers accidental damage too.

Shoddy tactics from Gamestation saying that Sony are poor. Was it 2 years on top of the manufacturer warranty like at HMV?

What a crock...no point in asking one of those goons anything about your consumer rights.
as if they would be versed in consumer rights..

Your contract of sale is with the retailer, and its them you seek action from, no matter what they try to weasel out of it with, if the item is faulty/turns out to have a fault.

Sale of Goods Act Fact Sheet - BIS

one of the quick facts:
Q6. Is it true that I have to complain to the manufacturer?

No. You bought the goods from the trader, not the manufacturer, and the trader is liable for any breaches of contract

RottenFox is right, they have no legal standing to refuse to deal with you. If it goes within the first 12 months, that's Gamestations' problem & they have to deal with Sony, not you.

Sounds like a shifty salesman (is their any other kind?) just trying to earn more commission off you by talking out of his anus.

If the extended warranty seems worth it to you then go for it, but not because some oik in a shop is trying to scare you wallet into opening further.

I hate salesman (sorry, I think the TalkTalk episode scarred me for life, I get every time I think of that lying bar steward............& relax).

I got the dreaded YLOD last night on my 18 month old 40 Gb PS3.

I first sought legal advice who said that I could reasonably expect a £300 unit to last more than 18 months with normal use.

In short, both Sony and Amazon said "tough!". I'm not paying £128 for something that might go kaput again in a couple of months.

My insurance co legal team said that I would get legal help under my policy...but do I want the hassle. Surely there must be some precedent for this. Has anyone fought the retailer (that is who my contract is with - I do realise that Sony are under NO obligation) and won?

I looked a bit more into this following the above posts on SOGA and it appears some peeps have had luck with getting replacement units outside of warranty.

Apparently you can be covered up to 6 years by the SOGA, but the catch is you have to prove the fault was there at the time of purchase.

I found this online,
"In most cases of failure for Xbox360 and Playstation 3 - The problem is a manufacture one. The Red Ring of Death and the Yellow light of death are caused by failure of the BGA solder points on the main board of the console. This fault was there at the time of purchase and means that the sale of the console does not conform to the Sale of Goods Act 1979 UK. It is up to the RETAILER and not the manufacturer to ensure that the goods are fit for sale and not inherently faulty at the time of sale.."

The following link is worth a look, it has links to the independent engineers to
Independent Game Console Fault report PS3 Xbox 360-YLOD-RROD

It all sounds good, until you read the below article, it seems sony don't want to accept that the solder problem is causing the YLOD, but if you are armed with an independent report i can't see how they cannot accept it.

The UK opted out of the 6 year Guarantee segment. We have 2 years.

Proof? Bet you can't post one link from a trusted site eg CAB, Consumer Direct, Trading Standards that say we get 2 years statutory rights. Although I'd LOVE to eat my words

I think you'll find that warranty is just one year carte blanche...but after that, it becomes complicated and depends on the product, cost etc! And even then, you have no automatic rights...you have to fight in court.

For my part, I've:
Reported my case to Watchdog AND Consumer Direct....plus I've escalated my complaint with the retailer's Legal team. Next step, after the inevitable fob off is a letter accompanies by Small Claims Court form.
