What is a homeplug and do I need one?

I have just been reading through some posts on here and people have mentioned a homeplug. Do I need one for my ps3 and what does it do?

Thanks

It just allows you to connect to a network trough the power wires in your house.

Better off using a network cable to the router, or if you can't do that, just do it with wireless.

Disagree.

In order of preference:-

Cat5e/6 Cable from PS3 to Router (gigabit if possible)
200mb Homeplugs (Should get you 80-100Mb connection)
Wireless (Only if you have to)

Ha, wireless? i hope that was a sarcastic comment.

Homeplug all the way, i have my house connected up via homeplug - works fantastic. Add a switch to each home plug and the possibilities are endless

Another to disagree. My PS3 wireless signal was about 46-47% and was not good. Bought a set of Homeplugs from Scan for about £40 and always have 100% now. No contest really.

They are suitable if you cannot get a direct connection from your router to your PS3 and your wireless signal is poo! One of the best things since sliced bread IMHO!

Oh, well me and my brother both have our ps3's hardwired into the router via a ethernet cable i think it is.

So my next question is, what is a Cat5e/6 Cable and which is better?

Cat6 just has a little extra shielding. Will make no difference to you in the real world though. Cat6 is more expensive as well.

I'm running a full wired gigabit LAN and Cat5e works fine.

Then if you are wired directly to your router then you have no need for homeplugs. They are for people like me with no option for wired and a pants wireless signal. You are using the optimum way!
