just after updating my ps3 to the 3.01 update it stopped playing bluray discs, everything else worked fine, after noticing that a load of people have had the same problem i thought that my ps3 was one of the ones to die forever. i was really annoyed as mine has had very little use, last night thought what the hell, its out of warranty, sony werent willing to do anything except charge me £130 for a refurb so i took it apart and thought id clean the laser, well after getting in a right mess with the drive, springs and screws everywhere , put it back together again not really thinking id achieved anything, fired her up and HEY PRESTO bluray working, still in a daze as to it working again maybe it was the lens, maybe it was just unconnecting the ribbon cables and connecting again, who knows.
i would recommend doing it if you have had a similar failure, youve got nothing to loose, and it might just work.
i googled some info on cleaning the lens after i put the drive together wrongly and it wouldnt even accept a disc and started clicking and whirring...DOH
