Question Swap a old/faulty PS3 for a new one on eBay??

Not sure if anyones come across this before, but does anyone know how exactly this person can do this?...

**SWAP ANY FAULTY / OLD PS3 FOR A BRAND NEW 80GB PS3** on eBay (end time 04-Nov-09 20:57:08 GMT)

I can not understand how they would make any money off of this, in fact surely they'd lose money?

The replacement PS3 is probably not a new one but one they have repaired or it is a scam " if it's to good to be true it usually is ".

Re: Swap a old/faulty PS3 for a new one on eBay??

the guys obviously "selling" the doorstop exchange that sony provide.
he has a ps3 in warranty, or several, and will phone sony to complain that its faulty, and he wants a swap, meanwhile, giving them your details, and organising a delivery/swap date..

Re: Swap a old/faulty PS3 for a new one on eBay??

This is one odd listing.

So this works with out of warranty consoles?

Could the guy have Continuous Play and be making a killing?

Either way if it holds up what is promised this is a bit of a blessing for those with YLOD consoles that are out of warranty.

Couldn't be as CP took the serial number of the console you were covering, and as you can't sign up anymore...

I've no idea how they're doing this... Maybe the courier is dropping off an empty box with some bricks in?

Re: Swap a old/faulty PS3 for a new one on eBay??

It looks obviously like a scam...

When I last checked the guy had sold 15 of these at £29.99 each... (within 48 hours).

That's around £450 and counting...

I suspect the ebay account is probably a fake or hijacked account and the money just comes rolling in...

Arranging a future collection/delivery date gives the seller plenty of time to get all the cash from everyone and do a runner well before buyers' suspicions would be raised...

I noticed there is another similar 'item' for sale on ebay from a different seller, this time regarding PSPs... It's basically an identical listing (except with spelling mistakes and poor grammar). I noticed this guy received quite a few negatives from people who fell for it, saying he scammed them and they couldn't contact him and didn't receive anything... (Weirdly, there were a few positives too saying they received theirs... Hmmmm... Could be fake positives from other hijacked accounts so I still think it's a scam...)

ebay obviously agree with me, as I notice the PS3 seller's item has now been removed...

Re: Swap a old/faulty PS3 for a new one on eBay??

Believe it or not I used this service last week and it worked!

I bought a broken PS3 off of here with the intent to fix it with a new HD, this didn't work so I was left with an expensive paper weight and a nagging wife who was questioning my sanity for wasting money on a knackered gadget.

If I broke the warranty seal to open the machine I was past the point of no return and I could have spent lots of cash on bits that didn't sort the RLOD.

Then in the search for bits I found said auction, the one I bought was £25 and I thought hell its worth a go, if its a scam then paypal will refund me. The guy emailed asking for the serial number and my address (was thursday or friday). I never heard anymore on friday/weekend/monday and thought the worst. Got a call from my wife on monday afternoon saying there was a courier there with a box. To cut a long story short it was a replacement 80GB PS3 with protective plastic over the sides (mine was an 20 month old 40GB), courier swapped it, put my broken one in the box and off he went. So far it is working perfect and have had no dodgy follow ups so far.

To be honest I was stunned that it worked, don't ask me how, the only dodgy thing was that it wasn't my name on the package but the right address, I assume it was the person involved with the auction.

All in £85 broken PS3 + £25 auction = £110 new 80GB PS3

Just the wife to convince now, told her I was going to sell it for a profit..........but I'm not.

But if he is giving them my serial number, which is an out of warranty model, the courier is then taking my machine back to sony. The guy can't have 25+ in warranty machines to do a fraudulant swap with every auction he sold surely?

how else do you explain it...either that, or another way is, he works for them, and is doing it internally...either way, they have your console with your details on it, yet i imagine the console he reported faulty, had a different serial number, IMO, the serial he asks for doesnt matter, you could give him any serial number, and it wouldnt matter.

i cant see this being legal no matter what way you look at it.

I can't see why he would go to the hassle of asking for your serial number if he didn't need it for what he was doing...

The only way i can think of is that this guy works for the Sony returns/repair and that he's doing this on the side without Sonys knowledge.

If you sell a PS3 on ebay, do you have to offer any sort of gurantee? (apart from that it works when it arrives, obviously)
