Viewing HD TV through PS3

I am unable to watch any HD media files over 1.2GB which are on my hard drive through the PS3. I realise there is a limit to the size of files that i can watch.
Has there been an firmware upgrade yet to resolve this issue?
I am tempted to buy a Western Digital or Popcorn C200 media player and forget using the PS3.

Can anyone help?

Re: Viewing HD TV through PS3

If the content is on the PS3s hard drive then there is no file size limit. If its on an external drive connected by USB then the file limit is 4gig so I doubt thats your problem. What type of file are you trying to play?

Re: Viewing HD TV through PS3

That's the key point, what type of HD media is it ? The usual type is "mkv" and this needs to be either pre-converted (using mkv2vob) or streamed via software that can convert on-the-fly (PS3 Media Server).

Although if you just want to watch media, then I would agree, you're better off with a WDTV.

Re: Viewing HD TV through PS3

its an xvid file which is recognised by the PS3 but once you plug the FAT32 formatted drive into the PS3 it does not read the file. How do i copy a 4Gb or 8GB file onto the PS3 hard drive when i cannot see the file?

Install PS3 Media Server on your PC.
Browse through the Media Server connection on the XMB then press triangle to copy the 4Gb+ file over the network to your PS3.

Re: Viewing HD TV through PS3

My PC is old and only running Windows 97. Would I need to purchase a newer version of Windows to use the PS3 media server?
Do you have a link for the media server which i can use?

Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but have you put the file you are trying to play in a folder on the usb stick called "VIDEO"?

If not to enable the PS3 to see it, select the drive, press Triangle and select display all. You should now see the file.

I'm guessing you mean Windows 98.

As long as you can get the latest version of Java to install I can't see any reason why it won't work.

Let me google that for you

Although saying that if you are running Win98 this isn't going to help as your PC OS is also going to be using Fat32.

WinXP is cheap. You should really upgrade the PC OS.

Re: Viewing HD TV through PS3

MP - yes all my files are under VIDEO or MUSIC. It plays most files just not the large type.

If I upgrade to XP then i asssume I can install the PS3 media server and then watch and listen to my files inc movie and album artwork. Is this easy to do? or should i just buy a dedicated media player like WM or Popcorn.
Thanks

Your choice really. PS3 will do virtually all media streamed other than DVD-ISO's and MKV's (these can be done with workarounds).

As you already have the PS3 I'd say go with the XP upgrade (Maybe worth posting full spec of your PC first..Ram/CPU etc..)
