Re: PS3 Slim DOES have universal power supply

Its funny because I emailed Sony a few days before I found the ifixit link asking this same question, and the response I got a few minutes ago said

"In addition, North American PlayStation hardware only supports a power supply of 120V AC, 60 Hz."

So either

1) Sony are just flagrantly lying to me

2) For some bizarre reason the PAL Consoles are universal and the NTSC consoles aren't?

I replied back saying thanks for the misinformation either way

Of course they are going to lie to you.. they are not going to want someone to go import from another region ie U.S and loose a European sale.

What is the advantage of getting a US machine? Is it being able to play region locked BD?

Well usually I agree. I thought of this too, and so deliberately made it sound like I was an American with a US console that was just doing a semester abroad and wanted to take my console with me. Like I said, I would usually agree with you, but that wouldn't have made sense in response to my query as as far as they are concerned, I emailed the US customer help service as an american with an american console, there is no "sale" to be lost

Re: PS3 Slim DOES have universal power supply

as for advantage, for me there was none. I just happen to be living in America at the moment and decided to pick one up as I saw the slim was coming out. I didn't even think about the power supply issue at the time as I originally had a phat console that I had used both in the UK and US and (correctly I guess) assumed without thinking that the slim would be exactly the same

They are told what to say no matter what the situation. Just like when a guy emailed Nintendo asking whether Zelda series was connected, the staff checking the emails have no ****ing idea what is going through the head of Miyamoto, did he honestly expect a good answer?

Who do you trust? Someone who answers emails as a living and is told to give specific answers to specific questions (no matter what the context, changing the situation and saying, 'oh im American and going overseas for a while', WILL NOT change the answer that they are told to give)

OR

someone who brakes open the hardware, takes pictures of the insides where it distinctively says the voltage details on the hardware as well as confirms what it states later on?

Frys electronics but they cancelled my order due to import restrictions.

Videogames plus charge $199.99 shipping to Australia , amazingly high.

Any other places I can try? Need it also for a region 1 dvd upscaler.

That's shocking. That's twice the price of shipping to the UK.

PS3 Slim Has Universal Power Supply

I bought my PS3 slim on october 1 2009 from colorware in the united states. I was totally worried about using it in France. I called Sony 2 times and both times they told me that I would fry my PS3 if i used it with out a transformer.

They lied.

I searched and found some people who said it worked, but was still hesitant. Then I got a good idea, i searched for replacement power supplies for the ps3. In the item description for the new part, it is described as being 110/220V.

I just plugged mine into the power in france - 220V and it works just fine.
No transformer necessary.

Makes sense really, what are the chances that Sony is going to make 2 different versions of the playstation when they don't have to. That just costs them extra money.

So, once again, my american PS3 works just fine in France.

I'm taking my UK PS3 slim to Japan next week (going to live there for a year).

Will it work without a transformer?

For future reference if anyone checks this thread, the PS3 Slim manual says "220-240v only". I phoned Sony and they said the same thing, that the power supply is not universal and that a transformer is required. I decided to take it apart and check the PSU itself after hearing so much conflicting info:

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7381/ps3psu.jpg

So yeah, it definitely says 100-240v on the psu regardless of what Sony Europe may say. Picked up a cheap US figure 8 power cable off ebay so I'll give it a go in Japan next week

US to UK

I have plugged in my us ps3 in the 240v outlet here (the ps3 has 110v written on it) using the same cable it came with. I just used a plug which converts us pin type to uk pin type. I have no issues in running it on 240v power.

You DON'T need to use a converter (the clue is in the title of this thread- PS3 Slim DOES have universal power supply)

The power supply inside the PS3 can already handle 50 & 60Hz/110-240v, so no need for a separate converter to do the same job.

I have been searching and searching and can't find any info about the 320g slim having a universal power supply. I know above, you guys state that all ps3 slims have a universal power supply does this one have it too, I just want to be sure. It's probably a stupid question, but I am realy afraid of frying my brand new ps3 and i want to play it soooo bad.

The only difference with the 320 is simply the hard disk size, everything else is the same.

Absolutely! I bought a PS3 Slim from the US and though marked 110v its got a multi-volt power pack as well outlined over here. So go on and plug your PS3 to 240v. I use 240V with no issues!!
