PS3 Dead?

Today I went to use the PS3, turned on fine but after about 5 minutes it switched itself off. Now when you go to turn it on, it goes green then yellow and then red with 3 beeps before the red light keeps on flashing.

I am guessing this is the YLOD?

If so, I bought this PS3 in July 2007 so obviously out of warranty so I'm guessing that ringing Sony will do me no good at all?

Bit dissapointed really, £400 and it only lasts two years

Re: PS3 Dead?

It's dead. Happened to me in March of this year. Mine was a 60gb launch model as well. The only thing you can do is exchange it with Sony and they will supply you with a refurbished model for £145. They had it couriered to me the next day and the refurbished one was just like getting a brand new model. The courier will take away your broken one but it must have the original HDD in it. I'd fitted a 400gb one in mine but kept the original 60gb so I swapped it back. Also all my game saves were lost but any games you downloaded from the PSN can be re downloaded at no further cost. I also had a game disc stuck in there but Sony will send you the game back once they have got it out for you. This takes about ten weeks.

It's crap when it happens but I'd never had any problems with it prior to this and I still swear by PS3s. I don't know anyone else in my circle of friends that this has happened to. I know four people who's Xbox 360 has died on them more than once. One of which is now on his FIFTH Xbox!

Hope this helps a bit dude

Re: PS3 Dead?

Didn't mean to thanks this, but that doesn't hurt anyone

Yeah mate the same thing happened to mine yesterday as well. Now, I can use it for a few minutes before it does the same thing again. I just can't believe it happened during the kz2 double points weekend as well

I'll probably go for the repair route, but first I'll have to see what Sony CS says.

Re: PS3 Dead?

The refurbished consoles you pay for, would it also be a 60gb?

If not, may try buy one from here or ebay.

Re: PS3 Dead?

Yep-the refurb one will be a 60gb model if your model is a 60gb. To repair a PS3 with the YLOD will cost you around £100+ p&p and there aren't many places that can do it. To be honest,I wouldn't trust sending it off to anyone apart from Sony. When you get a refurb with Sony,it comes with a guarantee for three months. Better than nothing eh?

Re: PS3 Dead?

If you're really brave, YLOD can be repaired following instructions at:
YouTube - PS3 YLOD Fix Part 1 of 2

This is part 1 of 2 so you'll need to pick up part 2 when first video finishes.

This seems to be a known problem for the 60Gb Launch PS3s - see forum at 60GB Only Launch PS3 YLOD Victims & Info Thread - PLAYSTATION®3 General - PlayStation.com Forums for details.

Mine broke a couple of weeks ago and I sent it to PS Pros:
PS Pros - PlayStation Repair Services and Refurbished Systems

Marc as PS Pro is a good guy and was really helpful over phone and email.

It was fixed no problem for £65 but broke again a couple of weeks later. PS Pro are fixing again for free under their 90 day warranty so fingers crossed.

If it breaks again I may just buy another one. I wouldn't buy off Ebay or 2nd hand as you are likely to buy one that has had YLOD repaired.

Mine broke whilst playing Infamous (both times). Other threads have put the blame on COD so it could be the graphics intensive games that are causing overheating? Anyone else had similar experience with these games?

Any other thoughts welcome. Having spent a load of time looking into this it does seem that a load of launch 60Gb PS3s are now failing so please post on this thread if you have same experience.
