My son is having problems with his PS3 ie his friends icons keep disappearing, anybody had the same problem and now how to rectify?

He turned it on initially and it said restoring data or similar.

I had this problem a while back and a software update seemed to solve it. Has he done a system update recently?

No, not lately, when and what was the last version?

I've recently had this problem,

To be honest not sure how I solved it. I did do a full backup and then a restore. Try rebuild database option. Search you tube for PS3 recovery menu shows you how to get into it. I also did restore PS3 ..... BUT you lose all games saves.

I'm not sure whether it was that that solved it or something else.

No, he's on Virgin, he would be devastated if he lost his game saves. Although he mostly plays online now.
