On a positive note, the gameplay is better on the PS3.

Is it just FIFA09? Not sure if it looks worse in general or what as I've not played it.

If you have just bought a ps3 then check in the ps3 settings ( not in game settings )

System Setting -Display settings - video output or something- make sure its Full and not limited. when its limited it obviously limits the imagine quality when its full it can sometimes be better quality then 360, google it if your not sure.

Also make sure the sharpness on your tv is up so it gives a clearer but little bit more jaggy imagine.

Completely dependent on the display they are using, in actual fact it's far more likely that limited is the correct setting. It has nothing to do 'limiting the image quality' (why on earth would there be a setting for that?) and is all to do with the PS3 'telling' the display which video levels to use. Limited is YbCBPr and full is RGB, i.e. PC Video levels.

@OP - Fifa does just have a slightly better IQ on the 360

Yep - agreed. If your TV doesn't support full range then setting to full will actually be worse because the PS3 will be sending colours outside of the TVs range, hence it won't display them. This can be clearly seen on some of the test images at the beginning of the game where you adjust the contrast. On some games (e.g. Killzone 2) if you set the PS3 to full on a TV that doesn't support it you simply can't see the test image, however much you change the contrast. Setting to limited means the PS3 compensates and ensures that everything that's sent to the TV it can actually display. Of course if the TV supports full then that's the way to go

I wouldn't' say "Far More Likely".. Surely its more likely that you would have a TV which does NOT support "Full Range" since this is a relatively new feature.

I have a fairly new Panasonic 50" Plasma, and that doesn't support "Full Range"... Interestingly, when you first switch on 'Full Range' it initially makes things look better, as you get much more prominent shadows/highlights.. But soon you realize that all of the detail is 'lost' in the shadows/Highlights.. All of the mid-tones are correct.. but the low-lights are BLACK and the high-lights are WHITE...

Which is one of the reasons why I said it was more likely that limited would be correct, send a TV that doesn't accept/deal with RGB correctly and you'll get white/black crush, as you say. Not sure what your point is really

Re: Any settings to make FIFA 09 look better?

If you have a 1080p display then the PS3 version upscales and outputs a 1080p image with FIFA09, which looks considerably softer than the 720p version. If you want to see the difference deselect 1080p/1080p in your hdmi PS3 settings so that 720p is the maximum resolution and try it again, it actually looks a lot better to my eyes.

Still, a real pain and I wish they gave us the option to switch off the upscaling in the game.

EDIT: Also, 'full range' is intended for computer displays and not TVs. A computer display expects RGB values in the 0-255 range whereas a TV expects RGB in the 16-235 range (with the rest reserved for 'blacker than black' and 'whiter than white'). A video signal should conform to the TV standard of 16-235 RGB values, but if you're using a computer display then your 'black' will be RGB 16 which is too light, so this can be remapped onto RGB 0 with the 'full' setting. Setting this on a regular TV will make things look 'punchier' with more contrast, but you'll be losing a lot of image detail as your black level 16 is now remapped down to RGB 0. You're not going to see that on your TV display, so you lose lots of shadow detail.

'Limited' and 'superwhite on' are the correct settings for almost all TVs. They should have called the options 'TV' and 'Computer' then people would not think they were being shortchanged by setting the display to 'Limited'.

Agreed, I think 720p looks better too but it's such a fag to have to change my settings just for this game!

Ooopsss.. Sorry.. You are right.. My appologies.. Of course, "Limited" is more likely.. For some reason, I read the post as saying that "FULL" was more likely...

Completely my fault.. Sorry!

Thanks alot

It does indeed look better and considering I only play this and Formula 1 Championship Edition (which only goes to 720p) it works a treat and will leave it on that Setting for now.

Thanks again, made me alot happier

Thanks to everyone else who has commented too!
