Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Hi, I don't have time to play both, I have heard good things about both games, would you recommend ordering Demon's Souls now or get Dragon Age?

Cheers

Not heard much about Dragon Age but Demon's souls is a fantastic game, but very difficult (not frustratingly, just unforgivably) and time consuming.

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Just watched the 'violence' trailer for DAO, and it looks like there is a world of difference between the 2 games.

Demon's Souls is an almost silent, creeping through darkness afraid for you life experience. (probably aimed at 'grown ups')

DAO looks like it's an in your face, noisy rush in and fight type of game. (more geared towards teens / early 20's demographic)

Being an old git I prefer the style of Demon's Souls but I'd say it depends what you personally are after in a game.

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

DAO is a more traditional party-based RPG (you control multiple characters) with a strong and involving storyline; your skill at it will be based on your characters levels, equipment etc. DS is a much more action and atmospheric rpg, you control a single character, its more fps-style in its combat, and your skill is based on the player's skill to a very large degree.

I am loving DS but am also getting DAO as I loved the Baldurs Gate series and they both are different enough to give hours and hours of rpg heaven

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Demon's Souls has had good reviews but personally I'm very much looking forward to Dragon Age Origins. Bioware have made some excellent rpg's including Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the old Republic and the brilliant Baldur's Gate series and if Dragon age can live up to these titles then it should be something special.

I would say rent DAO before you buy it, Bioware have a very good rep for making rpg's though but it might not be everyones cup of tea. I cant recommend Demon souls enough thou, it deserves to be played.

Hmmm, I did enjoy KOTOR (on PC) so might have to keep an eye on DAO after all...

Thanks for everyones comments. I decided to take Hotcuppa's advice, I purchased Demon Souls tomorrow and will get DAO through my lovefilm account. Everyone barring none seems to rate DS very highly.Look forward to meeting some of you guys out there I'll let you know what I think.

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Probably better to play Dragon Age Origins on the PC as Bioware are primarily a PC developer and the lead platform for the game is the PC.

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

You need a decent pc to play it though so maybe safer with the ps3 version. No tweaking needed just pop in and play I think DAO looks better, played through Demons souls a while back and it was brilliant but from what i have seen/heard DAO has a better story and the combat looks really good.

Metacritic have both games on the same score at the moment with several sites giving them almost identical scores in the 90's - so almost impossible to choose now!

I have seen one extensive video review that said DA was a pretty good console conversion from PC and that PS3 was the better version compared to xbox etc, but what we really need is someone who has played both games

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Delayed till the 20th Nov i think? so will be a while, unless someone gets the Xbox/PC version and has played Demon's Souls?

Personally i think they're such different sorts of games you shouldn't be comparing them, you'd be better to compare Dragon Age: Origins to Operation Flashpoint and Demon's Souls to Armored Core: For Answer

I am waiting on my Xbox copy to arrive, so can compare...if I can drag myself away from Demon's Souls that is!!!

As someone else mentioned though, they are very different types of RPG, so comparison isnt going to be very useful.

well there is one good reason to compare, and that is that both these games will be very time consuming, I for one won't have time for both so I would prefer to make an informed decision on which one to spend that much time on!

if you watch the gamespot video review of DA, he gives the impression that it's the best rpg experience out there at the moment, and he is the same guy who did the demons souls review

Thing is they are very different experiences, DS is brilliant but its difficulty and sometimes repetitive nature can put people off. DA I am expecting to have a great story, and more tactical slower feel to the combat (controlling 4 characters after all).

Either one I think you will enjoy, which is the bottom line I think. If you dont mind the idea of grinding a little and repeating levels over and over again then get DS, if that puts you off and you prefer a deeper story then DA:O.

What sort of RPGs do you normally like(have played etc), maybe that will help us recommend one to you?

Giant Bombcast put it brilliantly: Every young kid should play Demon Souls, its the perfect way to explain to them "life does not always go your way. Infact, its pretty ****"

Brutally tough game in places. I had to call time on it simply as I wanted a more quick fix gaming experience. Definitely a Hardcore gamers game.

Great quote

Last night was a bit frustrating for example; After dying for like the 6th time on 4-2 NG+, i finally got to the boss, only to get one-shot-killed on his very first attack... My fault, as i should have been more careful, and i was tired after all the attempts.

I'm not expecting much more than a polished up-fantasy Knights of The Old Republic from DA:O really, I'd love a team-Oblivion, but i not seen anything saying it's got that openness or customisation.

I think a lot of people will want to decide between these two, Demon souls from what i've read, reminds me of the old school rpg's i used to play on amiga, quite a lot of depth and pretty hard, the type of game we haven't really seen much of on modern consoles. Everquest on PS2 was one of my favourites although that was a MMO which obvioulsy DS isn't really.

The thing is, I would enjoy both games and i would have had DS by now had it not been an import because i just haven't got around to getting it.

DA had such a good review at gamespot that i will probably try that out initially

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Well I played DA last night. My initial impressions are that its good, though its graphics are just ok, the console controls are a bit clunky and combat needs a little planning. You are bang on about DS, and its a type of game that you just dont see anymore, and I cant think of a similar one in today's game market.

I think DA will grab me soon, due to the storytelling (already I have found Alistair hilarious) but for some brooding atmospheric brutal combat I will always go back to DS!!

Funnily enough, I've been a bit put off by IGN's review which did highlight a few flaws, I've now swung back in favour DS which i think might be the better long term game experience

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

From what I've read Dragon Age is really quite buggy, personally I would get Demon's Souls (not buggy in the slightest and probably the first game I've bought in ages that didn't need a massive patch straight away). I'm sure after Christmas Dragon Age will be cheap as chips and will have been patched

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

Dragon Age is also quite difficult, its also more of a hands off, management approach to battling rather than DS's gritty melee play.

The thing that puts me off about DA:O was the horrific, ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC, promo videos. Possibly the worst trailers I have ever seen for a game in my life. Set to Marilyn Mansion (of all things), it appeared to focus on cliched fantasy knock offs, look we have gore!, look we have the sex! Dreadful. Since the story is meant to be the fore of DA:O, I'm a bit wary of ploughing time into a story that is gash... regardless of how sophisticated its branching and consequence mechanics are.

The gameplay I saw without any story in it looked good though although I'm not a big fan of the hands off, KOTOR approach to battle. I hated KOTOR. Hated it. One of the few games I've traded in with utter disgust after realising that I was purely playing it because it had lightsabers. Awful story and conversation mechanic in that too. In fact, I almost passed on Mass Effect because people were selling it as KOTOR without the licence where it actually turned out to be quite good.

DA:O is certainly a PC game, apparently scales well to lower end hardware too. Head to PC above all else on that. Its the big push for "maturity" that is off putting, because it comes across like a try hard teenager.

Re: Dragon Age Origins or Demon's Souls

I've heard that Demons Souls is really hard so a no go for me who is not prepared to commit lots of time. DA on the other hand is from Bioware and I have played lots of Bioware games and they have an interesting story without being too difficult.

The only question in my head is whether the port is good or not.
