Exclamation Burnout Paradise

Is it worth getting?

...or is the fuss over, and should buy a newer game?

Never really liked the demo, but just saw about the bike update and it's got me really interested...

Worth £14?

Re: Burnout Paradise

IMO I think it's worth £39 so £14 is a total bargain.
But I really liked the demo too.
If driving games aren't your thing then give it a miss.

I think the reviews say it all.
But there are the few that just hate it

Re: Burnout Paradise

its worth £14, thats how much i paid for mine two weeks back. I don't really play it much though, i probably need to get into it.

Found out yesterday how to put custom soundtracks onto it.

Re: Burnout Paradise

I don't play it much either. I downloaded it off the store. It's the sort of game I play when I don't have much else to do. If they added splitscreen I'd play it alot more! Maybe that's one of the updates coming.

I think it's definitely worth full price, let alone £14. It's still up there as one of my favourite games of the generation. But having said that, if you didn't like the demo then I wouldn't be expecting anything too different from the game. Did you play the demo online after they added the online challenges?

Re: Burnout Paradise

Picked it up last week for 14 quid.
The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay is great.
However, if I keep playing this game I am going to end up smashing my PS3 to pieces! It is without a doubt the most infuriating game I have ever played.
I cannot stand the fact that you do more crashing than driving! Just the slightest touch with another object triggers the most annoying crash cutscenes that cannot be skipped. It is SO annoying.
Also the fact that you cannot change the controls is rediculous! I want to be able to use X as go and Square as brake, not the trigger buttons! Because of this I find myself pressing the wrong buttons all the time causing me to lose events.
Also, the fact that you cannot restart an event is very very very annoying. If you are doing really badly, you HAVE to finish the event even though you know you have lost. And then if you want to do it again, you have to find it on the map and drive all the way back to it.
The game also needs 2 player split screen.
So all in all I don't think this game is even worth 14 quid unless it has the options to:
1. Skip the crash cutscenes
2. Have 2 player split screen
3. Restart an event
4. Change the controlers to STANDARD driving ones which everyone is used to.

You can stop the race - just stop your car for a couple of seconds and it stops whatever event you were doing, then you can either drive back to where you started or just pick another event.

Also the online is so good with seamless start and finish that split screen isnt needed in my opinion

1) Firstly, Burnout has always been about good-looking crashes, but even so, if you want to win races, you have to avoid crashing
2) Splitscreen in an open world sounds really hard, but if they can do it, I'm sure they will. There's a local party mode coming early next year, so if splitscreen can be done I'm sure they'll release it after that.
3) Just stop for a couple of seconds and the race stops. You shouldn't ever need to restart an event until you get down to the last few events before picking up your Elite license - wherever you are in the city there's always events nearby to do.
4) Can't help you pressing the wrong buttons all the time. If Accelerate, Boost and the occasional tap of Brake confuse you, don't ever play a FPS

1. It's not the fact that I don't think they look good. I just find that in this game it is far too easy to crash, and when it plays an annoying cut scene (which cannot be skipped) every time you do crash, it gets frustrating. I never found this problem with the previous Burnout games.
2.Good point, but you have to pay for the local party world. If they release split screen it should be free, as all racing games should have it as standard.
3.Fair enough, I didn't know you could stop it. But it would still be nice to be able to restart an event from the beginning rather than having to drive all the way back. A quick jump option to events (like in GTA4) would also be awesome.
4.It's not that I am confused by the buttons, it's the fact that EVERY single racing game I have EVER played has X as go and Square as brake, and because of this I am used to this setup, so find myself pressing those buttons by mistake. I'm sure loads of other people have the same problem. Why EA couldn't put in the option of custom controls seriously baffles me.

I used to feel like you - but once you get used to it you will find you have more control and it now seems to be the standard set up for next gen games

Re: Burnout Paradise

The fact that there are hundreds on races negates the restart option for me, plus you'll find that end position usually has a race back to an area very close to your original start.

Re: Burnout Paradise

Well the triggers are used for analog control... if you had played on a gamecube or Xbox 360 you'd know that having a trigger as accelerate has been the standard for a long time so that you can have accurate control of your speed rather than on or off.

The problem I have with this is the new L2&R2 designs for the Sixaxis/Dualshock3 controllers - they just seem to springy and my finger always ends up sliding off the accelerate!

...Is this just me?

TBH I always thought people were making it up when they say their fingers slip off or it's the xbot users used to a different controller making a point

My fingers have never slipped off and I have big hands.

Its more to do with the lenght of time ive been playing the game and how stressed I am, i.e how sweaty my hands become

Just bought the Ultimate box.
Nice looking game and pretty good fun BUT the online experience doesn't come close to that of Test Drive Unlimited.

Online is still well supported given that the game is a year old. More content to come, albeit not free. If you get a good group together it can be a real blast.

I loved Test Drive Unlimited too, but they are quite different games despite some similarities (e.g. free roaming of the island; different events at different locations etc).
