Am playing this on the PC so can't be sure if the same applies to the PS3 version, but in game there are no FF settings & by default the dead zone for the steering is set at 35% which if like me you don't check at first, makes the prep lap ridiculously hard to adapt to.

The FF can obviously be configured in Windows but I would imagine the PS3 version will have something in-game. At default, its fine with the FF kicking in as you go over kerbs, hit cars etc. It's the resistance that a little touch and go. At times feels like you are floating on a point & the resistance lets go...it's weird.

1st tier was easy, went into the second, bought a Porsche, maxed it out with everything and now can't control the damn thing...a race round Spa requires so much concentration that is causes stress on my neck and shoulders...reminds me of GTR 2 driving the lambo around Spa but the difference is this damn 'floating-point'. I've got no assists on so maybe that is the cause BUT I play GTR 2 with no assists and you just don't get that. It's strange to describe.

Still trying to decide what to make of this game. Don't know if I like it...but at the same time I think it's good...I've never felt so up & down about a game in such a short period of time. I like it as it feels like a modern day GTR game but I can't love it because I just don't get a feel for the handling, maybe it hasn't clicked yet or maybe I need to make some adjustments to the steering wheel...I dunno Thing is, I also played it on the 360 and thought the same BUT then I was under the impression that I am playing a racer with (a) a controller & (b) a controller that I rarely play with & that's why it didn't really click and believed it would be different once I was behind the wheel.

Will have the weekend to give it a full test run but initial impressions are a little mixed at this stage.

I'm sleeping at work in preparation... and I only work 5 miles from home, so shouldn't be an issue

Would have missed it in the closed thread, but i've got my make do G25 setup until I get the stand

Re: Need For Speed:Shift - Play & Help Thread

nice set up

Looks comfortable

Still up in the air over a wheel / stand - like the idea of it and I am sure I would get the use out of it but with COD6 out in 8 weeks.......

I suppose once I have the wheel etc it will last (its not like the go off).....maybe a nice crimbo pressie from the wife

will struggle along with the old faithful DS3.....it will give me an excuse when you boys start lapping me online

Re: Need For Speed:Shift - Play & Help Thread

Apart from the squashed up legs on the pedals, which will be cured when I get the stand, it's not bad!

But even in this position racing NFS Undercover is very immersive, I had a big grin on my face playing last night. I definitely recommend getting a wheel

Roll on Shift!

Re: Need For Speed:Shift - Play & Help Thread

I managed to get a couple of hours in last night, here's my thoughts (for what they're worth )

I'm not going to talk about all the fluff, it's the handling that needs the most discusion I feel. Like most others who have dabbled in it so far - it's a bit 'meh'. (To start with).

Going back to Brandon66's post in the preview thread, adjusting the control settings in the control adjustment menu option is a must. For me, it was the brakes that need the most attention. Here's my settings (from the top of my head):

Controller settings:
Steering Dead Zone 15%
Accelerator Dead Zone 15%
Brake Dead Zone 15%
Acceleration Sensitivity 40%
Steering Sensitivity 40%
Braking Sensitivity 30%
Speed Steering sensitivity 80%

Experienced, full damage, SC -off, TC-low, ABS-on.

Once I set these I was happier with it - but not entirely satisfied.

It wasn't to I got to the upgrades, that things really did look-up. Sod the turbos and the likes, the first port of call should be the suspension and the tyre upgrades - as they completely transform the handling. If I was to now compare the handling with any previous game I've played it would be the TOCA Race Driver series. And that suits me just fine.

So, just give it a bit of time, get the control settings right (which you can't adjust mid-race annoyingly), plod through a couple of Tier 1 events and unlock the upgrades options for the Tyres & suspension and then make your mind up would be my advice.

Sorry, it's a bit brief, busy at work at the mo.

I've probably got a few wrong off the top of my head, I'll check them later and post them up. But have a play with them.

Forgot to say - I couldn't handle the L2/R2 brake/gas (config 1) for Shift. That setup's OK for the likes of MotorStorm/Grid where lead boots rule the day, so I've swapped to config 3 and use the right-stick for brake/gas (my preferred method). For me, this improved things too.

I thought you were using the wheel? sounds like you're now talking about the control pad?

Re: Need For Speed:Shift - Play & Help Thread

Looks like a made a mistake ordering from Argos.. I saved a few quid, but it hasn't arrived, even though it says on their website "delivered on Sept 18th".

Its still possible that the post man is late, but even though we get post here later than most, its not usually THIS late!

And I am on the last day of my holiday too.. Was looking forwards to having a bit of a play later.. Luckily I popped into work today to borrow my colleagues copy of Dirt 2.. Atleast I have something to play today.

Jon

Edit: I have gone back to see how Argos advertise it and they are a bit sneaky.. The title says "Delivered ON 18th Sept", but then they go on to say:

# Argos will endeavour to deliver FREE on the launch date using 1st Class Royal Mail. However Argos cannot be held responsible for any delay in delivery if there is a disruption to postal services outside of our control
# Please allow 48 hours from dispatch for delivery of the game.

So to deliver it 'ON' a date, they just use 1st class post.. Since unlike Shopto, they seem to dispatch this the day before release, its by no means guaranteed that you will get it the next day (i.e the day of release).. Never mind.. Alteast I should have it for Saturday.

My pre-order from Shopto was (attempted anyway) delivered yesterday.

You having problems with the Post office action in your area?

Also don't they(shopto - not the PO!) promise a £3 credit if you do not get it on day of release from a pre-order?

What about the game in general? What's it like compared to previous NFS games?

More importantly have drag & drift events been reintroduced?

Re: Need For Speed:Shift - Play & Help Thread

As usual, a game thread which deals with shops, postmen and orders and hardly any mention of the game! I don't believe people are interested in your online shopping experiences.

Obviously, mods can delete this post if they wish.

If anyone has actually played this on a PS3, do you notice much or any tearing? Is it as bad as DiRT 2? How about frame rate issues?

Thanks

I can see your point, but on the otherhand most people are yet to play the game so you will see few comments about the game play itself until they do.

People are excited in anticipation, this thread is a method in which to express those feelings and talk to likewise people. This is a way in which a community and bonds between members can grow.
