Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

Thought i'd create this as there isn't one already, anyone playing it yet, if so lets hear your thoughts.

I don't have the game yet and not sure I am going to get it with SHIFT out next week. But I am itching to use my G25, I may go rent it out from Blockbuster.

Glad you also have the same dilemma as me.. I got my G25 and bought several of the older games (F1, Dirt, Ferrari Challenge).. Some of them arn't great with the G25 and after playing the Dirt 2 demo, figured that perhaps its better to buy something 'modern'

Was considering getting Dirt 2, but now the reviews for NFS:Shift have got me reconsidering.

So I am interested to hear what people think of Dirt 2...

Hi Jon, if you thought F1 & FC were disappointing with the G25, I really don't think it will get much better. IMO they are both very good with G25 along with GT5:P.

What is it that is lacking in those games for you as far as G25 goes?

Back on topic, I have brought FIFA 09, Moto GP 09, Sega Rally & HAWX into work with me and may pop to GAME for a trade-in. who knows I may not, as I have Supercar Challenge & il-2 arrived yesterday too. Too many games , too little time...but I just can't stop myself!!!!

I didn't say that F1 and FC were disappointing.. I said that I bought SOME older games (including F1, FC and Dirt) and SOME were disappointing (but not all).

Specifically, F1 is great.. REALLY great.. FC is hard.. REALLY hard and I don't believe that its a true simulation of 'driving' as I drive on a track regularly and have never had the kind of problems that I have with FC... To put it in perspective, I have had the privilage of driving a F430 around Thruxton and pushed it pretty hard, and never once spun or ended up on the grass... It just drove, like a normal (but fast) car.. It didn't understeer.. It didn't oversteer.. It just went in the direction that you wanted it too.. Where as the same car in FC, just goes all over the place!

And Dirt.. Well.. Thats just plain awful with the G25.. I want to like it, but its almost impossible...

Certainly F1 is the best so far, but I am looking for something else.. And preferably something 'new' so that I can learn/play at the same pace as everyone else.

The demo of Dirt 2 was something impressive. It was lovely with the G25 and really showed off what the wheel can do.. I was certainly considering that, but then Shift came along!!

So I am not sure now.. I don't think I am going to play FC and Dirt much.. But then again, do I need another racer?? Do I need 2??

Jon

PS. I know what you mean about having too many games.. Last weekend I bought Mirrors Edge because it was £5.... At the same time they had 'pre-owned' copies of Fifa 08 and PES 2008 for £2 each, so I took them too.. Then I bought F1, Dirt and FC.. And now I want Dirt 2 and/or Shift... Oh yes.. And I bought Crash Commando, because it was £4.. At the same time I am still loving Grid and don't want to loose sight of COD5.. On top of this I also have Resident Evil and Wolfenstein on my 360 that I want to play.. There is no chance that I am going to get the most of of ANY of these games.. Which is a shame!

And none of this includes the upcoming games I want (Guitar Hero 5, COD:MW2, EyePet and GT5)... There just isn't enough time, is there??

re: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

Sorry Jon, I misunderstood. Yes F1 is great and personally really like FC, when I first got it, i hated it. Was unplayable, couldn't stay on the track & no fun. I think if you look at the FC threads you will see this experience mirrored by those that persisted. It slowly transforms into one of the best console race experiences BUT it does take dedication. I am now on Supercar Challenge and that is even harder and more frustrating! Sucker for punishment I guess I think Pauliezx pointed out that in real racing these cars do have ABS & Traction Control, so why in simulation are they off? I am not sure why I play with all the assists off...definitely a sucker for punishment!

Back on-topic, just called local GAME & they are selling it for £45 so it's a definite no for me. Would have got it from Shopto but with all the postal strikes and a series of old games that could be traded, I though I could do it on the high street...but definitely not for that price. I can't remember the last time I paid £40 for a game!

t!
No problems.. I think you have hit the nail on the head.. "it takes dedication" and this implies Time.. And I question why someone would bother, when there are other, more accessible games out there.

What I don't understand is why it needs to be this hard... Its meant to be a simulation, which I get... Its not an arcade racer, so I meant to be accurate.. But that's my point.> Its not... Cars just don't' handle like that and they aren't that hard to drive.

Even at slow speeds, FC is almost impossible to control... But at high speeds, its ridiculous.. Compare it to GT5, if you drive that slowly, even my Mum could do it.. Because it drives like a real car.. If you push it and make a mistake you will pay... But you CAN correct it.. But with FC, its just like its designed to throw you off the track by default and then measure you by how you manage NOT to go off.

I am not saying that its bad.. But faced with the other titles that I have access to right now, I just can't see how/why I would bother playing it.

Jon
Yeah that is fair enough as sometimes I wonder the same thing myself but whatever it is, it keeps drawing me back in. The feel of the game/race is very rewarding once you have mastered it but that is a big IMO!

I will definitely get NFS as I think the GT/R games on the PC are fantastic & want to see what they have done at Slightly Mad Studios with this title.
...& then there is GT5 in December

So, you getting DIRT 2?

Dirt 2 with G25 ?

Hi

As anyone got Dirt 2 yet and using a G25 wheel ?
I plugged mine in and it does not recognize it and nothing in the control options to choose it despite saying on page 1 of the manual "all logitech wheels supported and profiles for each are provided " where I ask

Strange - the G25 worked well in the demo although I had to turn the FFB down a bit.

Tempted by this on the PS3 with the G25 rather than on the 360. Enjoyed the demo with the G25 - thought it felt much much better than on the 360 with the controller. Transformed it from a game that didn`t grip me to one that I am seriosly tempted by. However, I`m also after Beatles RB, NHL10 (next week) and possibly Need for Speed Shift once we hear from a reliable source what the handling is like particularly with the G25.

I would be interested in to hear the views of those with the full game particularly with a wheel - surely they can`t have missed out wheel support given that it was in the demo ?

Cheers

Have you tried plugging the wheel in the PC or trying it with another game that you are 100% certain works with G25 to rule out any fault with the G25?

Or have the wheel plugged into the ps3, switch the PS3 on, does it do the calibration?

I doubt very much they have forgotten to support the G25 & inclined to believe your G25 has developed a problem, or isn't powered up properly.

Have you tried launching the game from the XMB using the buttons on the G25?

I was playing the demo the other night and used the controller to get it going and my G25 did not work..

Re: Dirt 2 and G25 help

I answered in the "play and help" thread too.. Are you 'launching' the game using the G25 buttons, or a 6-axis controller?

The other night I had the same problem with the demo (G25 not recognized) and it was because I had used my controller to launch the game.

How many times you going to pose the same question!?!?

I think your question has been answered by Jon back in the original Dirt 2 Pay & Help Thread!

I didn't realise there was a third post.. Let me post here too, for continuity... Lauch the game using the buttons on the G25 and NOT the 6-axis controller

If you launch the game using the controller on the demo, the game starts, but you don't get Wheel options. So I assume its the same on the full version.

I was launching the game with my controller and no wheel , this time I launched with the buttons on the shifter and HEY PRESTO it works.
Its excellent with the G25 and the sound pumped up on my 50" Pioneer in 1080P
Thanks for the tip mate , why dont the stupid programmers tell you this in the manual.

Now what settings are you guys using for best control

You have posted the same question in three different threads in two different forums. This is against forum rules. Please don't do so in future or you may get an infraction.

Using the default set up but brought the feedback down to 80%, the resistance to 30/40% so the wheel is a lot lighter.

I ended up getting this from BB for a couple of quid after exchanging the above mentioned games. It's bloody awesome!!

What a great game - loving every aspect of it - even just with the controller!!

Online seems to be working great too - could do with some Dirt owning friends though - feel free to chuck me a friends request!

re: Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

Finally getting the hang of it, although still finding the rally parts a bit difficult, I think I just dont risk going fast enough at times.

Feel free to add me for some online races

I hear that over the bonnet view really works when using the G25 or any wheel for that matter.

Re: Dirt 2 with G25 ?

I have been using the cockpit view as I feel it helps add to the immersion when using a wheel, will try the wheel settings mentioned above. I found putting the feedback and strength up to 100% easier for me last night as it stops me being too twitchy, but now I'm used to it a bit more I will reduce it as suggested above.

Just watching qualifying then I will be back on this.

Re: Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

I've added whitehard and lisbon...I'll add you andy..when is everyone free for some online action?

what game types do people prefer?

Personally, I'd be happy if this game was rally only but all the events are fun so I'm easy when it comes to races....would people want to go in as a party in ranked games or prefer to just set up some private things?

thoughts anyone...?

Re: Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

Only gave it a try last night so need to learn quite a few of the tracks. I'll be up for some races tonight or tomorrow from about 8.30 onward if you want to add me.

Cheers, Steve.

Re: Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Play & Help Thread

Does anyone know how the xp amount for (offline) races works? I noticed that each time you try a specific event the xp that it gives goes down (when you run an event for the first time, the xp amount is highlighted in a reddish colour on the event selection map, but then goes grey once you have had one go).

Have been trying to search around for info on how it works, and wondering if it goes down based on number of times you have tried it, the placings you have finished each time, and whether it goes back up if you dont race it for a while or something. At the moment i'm guessing that you can only get maximum xp from races if you win them on the first attempt, and wondering if this might ever be an issue for how far you can go with your offline level.
