Playstation Network Problem

Hi there, I have been having problems with my PSN for a month and a bit now. I originally had my PS3 in DMZ mode so it would connect better to peoples games, I'm sure you know more about than what I do. Anyway, that stopped working and when I went to sign in I kept getting an error saying something along the lines of ''error, your dsn cannot connect to the server'' so I then went to Internet connection settings and scanned for my router and used that instead of DMZ to no avail still, something that caught my eye was that my routers signal strength was only a mere 5%!, I have my router downstairs and my ps3 upstairs, shouldn't be that low should it? Anyway I have never seen my routers signal strength go past the 40% mark.
I got it working for abit but without the DMZ it was struggling to connect to every game so I tried to put it in DMZ again but when I ran the test 'the internet connection' failed, Now it wont sigh me in all together, I really do not know what to do, can anyone of you help? Thanks.

Re: Playstation Network Problem

We to are having problems connecting to the psn. We have had the ps3 for over 12 months without any problems but over the last weeks or so it has only connected a couple of times. The signal strength is over 90% and the ps3 will connect to the internet. Any suggestions anyone.

Think yours is just down to lack of wi-fi signal, the PS3 isn't endowed with the best wi-fi signal in the world.

your best bet is either an ethernet cable (remember you can always run a cable externaly) or homeplugs

Re: Playstation Network Problem

yeah the PS3's wifi seems temperamental. Some people say that even moving their PS3 as little as a couple of inches has made their signal shoot up.

Would it be possible for you to run an ethernet cable from your PS3 to your router. Try that if possible. If not, try looking into homeplugs.

Homeplugs create a wired network between plug sockets, using your electrical wiring to shift the data around. Very simple. Plug in your Homeplugs - anywhere in the house - and you can transfer data between them. For example, I had one connected to my router downstairs and one connected to my PS3 upstairs and hey presto my PS3 was online. More reliable than wireless and fast too (Homeplug AV - at ~£125 - is fast enough for HD content but you don't have to get ones that expensive. You can get a cheap pair for £40 ). You can connect as many devices to your network as you like, either by buying more Homeplugs or using a switch/router connected to a Homeplug.

Check out this thread on them:
Homeplugs....A revelation!

For a lot of people running a Cat5e network cable between their router and PS3 isn't practical (devices on different floors in house, nowhere to hide cables etc..) if this is the case for you then maybe you could run a cable out of the router, through a hole in the wall outside then back into the house near the PS3.

As KillzoneFtw said homeplugs are a pair of devices that carry wired network traffic across your home mains power wiring. Just plug one in near your router and conenct it with a ethernet cable to your router then plug the other one in near your PS3 with an ethernet cable from it to your PS3.

Re: Playstation Network Problem

Thanks guys for the great responses. Looks like home plugs are the way forward then! So all I would need to do is plug one in to my router? then plug one in to my ps3 and they would connect as one? Could you take me a through a detailed run through on what I would need to do? would appreciate it, I'm not particularly very good at this technical stuff.

Thanks again.

No worries mate. That's what this forum is all about: helping others. I haven't used homeplugs myself but they are dead easy to set up. You plug one homeplug into a socket and using an ethernet cable, connect the homeplug to a connection on the back of your router. Then put the other homeplug into a socket near your PS3. Connect an ethernet from this homeplug into the ethernet port on the back of the PS3. All done!

Re: Playstation Network Problem

Sounds great mate, suppose that would stop a lot of lag as well?

Max Value 85 Mbps Home Plug Double Unit Pack: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

They look pretty decent, what do you think?

Also, would any sort of Ethernet cable do?

Thanks.

Yeah it should lessen lag if you were getting it before as it's basically like putting a cable straight from your PS3 to your router.
Yep those homeplugs look fine. But if you're looking to stream HD conetent I would go for ones with a higher MBps. That homeplug thread I posted is full of recommendations. Any ethernet cable will do.

Re: Playstation Network Problem

What do you mean stream HD? I have a HDMI cable in the back of my TV to make my PS3 appear in HD, so would I need to buy a more expensive one?

no mate I mean stream HD movie/video from your computer to your PS3. If you're not into streaming stuff, those homeplugs should be fine.

A review from Amazon on those max value homeplugs relating to PS3 use They sound perfect for you:

Quote:
Connected a PS3 in minutes - straight from the box, using the cables provided (not mentioned in the ad) to our internet connection. Change the settings on the PS3 to use a wired network. That was it! The instructions say don't use extension cables or surge filters. I did and still do - no drop outs or problems so far. I've battled with wireless connections and the protection systems they need but never again! Ace. Excellent product - I'm going to need more.
The speed you'll get depends on the wiring in your house. The 2 plug sockets you'll put the 2 home-plugs into should be on the same mains 'ring'

The two sockets you'll be plugging the homeplugs into should be connected to the same fusebox.

All you have to check is that there's one fuse-box. It's usually in the garage.
