| Re: PS3 as blu ray player april 2009
The Ps3 can play any media content on a usb drive , you can even hook up an external hard drive full of content and play that.
It also does an excellent job of upscaling DVD's, xvids, divx and so on, something which is not done as well in some standalones.
Sound wise it cannot pass HD audio in bitstream from a blu ray to an AV receiver , but it can internally decode and feed the resulting LPCM to your amp. I have both the PS3 and the panasonic BD35 blu ray player and both sound exactly the same through my amp (yamaha 1900).
The PS3 is also the fastest loading blu ray player out there , thats one thing that standalone players have not sorted out yet. Loading times are seriously long on standalones with some titles taking up to a minute to load up.
The PS3 is a very versatile machine, and as a blu ray player it is not inferior to any other bly ray player in its price range , you also get a quality media center and games machine and overall is excellent value for money
