So... What IS home???

Ive heard bits and pieces about it..
But I generally have no idea what it is or what its for?

I play games and watch dvds on my ps3, so what is home?
If anyone can just give me a brief idea and why it seems
everyone is getting excited about it?

Ta in adance

Re: So... What IS home???

At the moment not a lot but it has huge potential.

Main things i see it being used for are:

1. Game launching - get your mates round to your virtual pad and all launch in to the same game having chosen the game options in advance - saves all the hassle of trying to find people in lobbies etc. Once the game is finished - back to the virtual pad you go and decide what to do next.

2. Socialising with people on your friends list. This will be good once (if) Sony implement the abilty to stream music and video into your apartment. Have a few mates round for a chat while you are listening to some music or showing vids to discuss etc.

3. Visit virtual shows - eg the Japanese home recently had a virtual version of the Tokyo game show - wander round the booths and look at all the suff coming out over the next weeks/months. This obviously doesn't need to be restricted to game events and could be quite impressive if done properly.

Those are the main ones for me at the moment.

As it stands however i am not really using it. No real desire to buy virtual stuff - got everything for free in the beta anyway but if i hadn't i certainly wouldn't be paying for it.

Also not really interested in having conversations with people who think it is funny to run around shouting insults and sexual innuendo.

The bowling is a bit naff imo as is the pool.

So for me it remains a great idea with plenty of potential but so far that potential is unfulfilled - it is still a beta after all.

Re: So... What IS home???

Im poss a bit old fashioned at 27..
But,
Nothing beats the getting to lads round to my real pad
having a chat, listen to some tracks and have a few beers, real socialising.
Im not a big online gamer, so wouldnt care if my mates were
wanting to play or not.

Dont think this is for me.. definately for the kids half my age!

Oh well..
Ill give it a year or two.. see where it is then!

Ta for everyones explaination

You're right, nothing beats it to happen in real life but sometimes your mates might live on the other side of the country, you might keep intouch with old friends that have moved away or you might have clan members that you've met online and who don't live near you.

Those are the reasons for Home as far as I see it.

I'm definitely a bit old fashioned at 37!

Couldn't agree more - real life will always come out on top but as robothamster says that is not always possible. I have the boys round when i can but when that is not possible this is better than nothing - just as long as we don't have to drink virtual beer i'm happy

Re: So... What IS home???

At the risk of being the party pooper , Home is:

Downloading and installing a "channel" (even it's in-"game" icons look very wii-like) and then being kicked off the very very poor Sony servers 5 times in about half an hour .

When you are wondering around, wondering what all the fuss was about .

Getting to say "hello" and "where are you from" to lots of computer characters.......

Getting to see lots of Sony corporate advertising whilst you wonder around.

EDIT: d/l & logged on yesterday when there was no maintainence going on so it should've been a bit better service than that imho.

^^^^ Yes, I know, it's early yet, but I think I'll return to it in a month or so when hopefully there'll be more to it than the above .

Re: So... What IS home???

Still dont get it to be honest

I went on last night and either i'm getting old and 'out of touch' and dont get it or................... its a pile of tosh!

I know a lot of folk have been waiting a while for this but sorry guys but even the proposed features seem pointless to me.

Only my opinions of course.

Re: So... What IS home???

I've played it abit over the last couple of days and when I found that you have to buy things with real money, it suddenly turned from light entertainment to "no thank you, good bye!"

Can you go out of the square? There seems to be very little to do other than play a few games or endlessly download and wait for stuff to load

Re: So... What IS home???

Why would anyone bother to buy virtual stuff with real money?

I could understand if it was an arcade machine that gave you a new game to play but not furniture.

Re: So... What IS home???

In a nutshell 'Home' is a far more limited but prettier version of 'Second Life' (a PC based virtual world where you can do far far more and is far far larger).

Thats it really

I've not logged in for quite sometime and really can't see the point. I had a wander around the shops, but most of them weren't available and when I did get into one, it asked for realy money!

There just seemed to be bodies littered around the place with funny symbols above their heads in speach bubbles.

I think I'll stick to gaming and watching movies

Re: So... What IS home???

For me...

"Home is a place to interact with friends"

A mate of mine, who I have known a long time from Uni days, has just got his son a PS3. We can use HOME not only to chat to each other but also to play games...like bowling, pool, draughts, etc. He's at one side of the country and I'm at the other. So its good in that respect.

Yeah, if we want a quicker/better conversation, its best to just pick up the phone (until he gets a headset or Eye Camera), but what HOME gives you is the ability to be in the same place when you actually aren't AND play a few games.

I'm sure more games will be added eventually in HOME.

But I'd like to see SONY and the proper Game writers add the ability to play games against people in your friends list. e.g. launch GT5p, play a 2-player race against one of your friends, or against multiple friends, so it would just be your friends on the track. And it would be good if this sort of thing could be launched from within HOME or from within the XMB or the game itself.

Home is a flop that has wasted loads of money in r & d costs.

Oh and for me personally I don't want to load something up to then load something up again, maybe I'm "old-school" but meeting people in the game lobby is sufficient.

I've said it from day one, and various idiots on these forums (you know who they are) were trying to shoot me down, I thought they'd eat humble pie, but no apparently "it's a beta, and it will get better".

What these idiots can't see is that the concept is flawed, they'll improve things but they're not going to change the concept.

Give me private chat in game, and party chat so I can avoid randoms easily without having to mute each idiot individually, and cross game invites, oh and make it a standardised system, why does every game have a different way to invite people in or create lobbies, just let me use the xmb to highlight a name and send an invite and I'll be happy.
sounds about bob on to me

Re: So... What IS home???

To answer the initial question the answer is:

Sonys attempt to cash in on the massive phenominon "SecondLife" has been and take a cut of that pie with the audience they already have at their fingertips.
