PSN store a rip-off?

Surely sony get a larger slice of the pie if we download instead of buy games?

Why then are they selling burnout paradise for £25 in their store, which can be had for almost half that new, whilst physically owning a disc?

Doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

I think it has something to do with retailers not allowing them to sell it for less (saying they wouldnt stock it if they did). Yet doing it this way means there is NO incentive to going and buying a hard copy for cheaper. Thats why as long as they offer a Bluray alternative I will always get that instead of a download version. They need to offer at least some incentive to download, otherwise its pointless.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I agree. Just became a new owner of PS3 and visited PSN store, I am not impressed with the content and pricing of games. The contents look like from Jurrasic park era, so dated! You would have thought by now Sony, a giant electronics company, would come up with a slick and interesting site, but no, it's bare basics. Shocking

The movie trailers are months old, some are years old! And as you said, the price of the games are very expensive, who in their right mind would purchase them! I wonder if anyone has heard of E-bay!

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

i disagree.

You have to remember that the million or so uk ps3 users arent all tech/net savy like us.

for the average joe who has just bought his 80gb ps3, then having the chance to download a full ps3 game for 25 quid probably seems like a bargin.

this will be the same average joe who doesnt spend time at all on forums like this/gaming websites etc, so doesnt realise he can get the same thing for much cheaper. especially as when goes into game/gamestation/blockbuster etc on the highstreet, the game is probably still £30+.

this is the averge joe who buys his blu rays in HMV for 25 quid, because he doesnt realise he can get the same title for about £10-15 cheaper online.

also, i feel that although there isnt massive amounts of content on the PSN, the prices arent massively bad, you have to remember that we are not paying a subscription for PSN. this isnt an xbox live set up where you pay = therefore you expect. we dont pay...so we shouldnt expect.

What sony put on psn is reasonably priced considering we dont pay anything for using the PSN, they need to make a little money somewhere to keep the PSN service going, improving etc etc.

And i'd rather pay an extra 50p- £1 on DLC i do want, rather than pay £30-40 a year subscription and get a wider range of slightly cheaper content.

my thoughts anyway.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I actually quite like the PSN store. One example I can think of as good value is wipeout HD. I bought this almost a month ago for £11.99 and I am still playing it nearly every day. Can't get much better value than that.

(also, I think warhawk can now be bought on the psn for £15, pretty good price)

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

Wipeout HD is a great bargain, but Burnout for £25 is a silly price considering it can be had for £17 brand new on disc, and is resaleable because its a physical copy. I do agree with Gunhawk on "average joe" - I saw a guy in Game paying £49.99 for a PS3 when it first came out, I was amazed anyone would pay that for a game! I guess people have more money than sense sometimes.

They need to do for games what iTunes did for music, the downloadable content doesnt have to be REALLY cheap, just a couple of quid cheaper than a hard copy. At the moment the prices seem to be RRP. There is therefore no incentive to download rather than buy a hard copy. If Burnout was £16 I would buy it straight away as its a quid cheaper than online, but at £25 I'd rather buy a hard copy for £17, play it and sell it on.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I actually prefer downloading games. I have got Warhawk, GTP5, Pain, HV Bowling, Wipeout & now Burnout Paradise. Basically we are talking about a few quid here, discs get scratched and I find that if a game is on my hard drive I will play it alot more, other wise I get bored quick and sell at a loss. If I download games to my HDD then I find I get much more gaming time on them, thus getting my money's worth.

I would agree its more convenient to download, but when the price is £9 more (in the case of burnout or £7 more in the case of Siren) it seems to jar a litte for me. I would download the titles if they were the same price or lower, but im not paying extra to play it off the hard drive, and with no resale value.

I included the word "PS3" to put the phrase in context without quoting the entirity of what I had originally written. But yes, you're quite right, the WORD is "game" well done you!

I wish people would quit thier moaning!!!

You're not being forced to pay these prices! PSN is 100% service with free demos, themes, videos and FREE online play.

Who gives a rats **** if a games is a couple of £ on PSN than the shops. You don't have to buy it

Well Im sorry we had a misunderstanding - I do think its hard to convey sarcasm well on forums or in emails. Personally I use a wink to convey it rather than rolling eyes.

I dont think its moaning, its just an observation really. I just dont think its a great business model in comparison to say iTunes which realsied you need an incentive to get people to download rather than buy a hard copy (by lowering the price fractionally). I just got burnout for £15.97 at The Hut, and yes it may only be a £9 saving, but for me thats £9 towards another game. I don't feel Im moaning about it, I just think its a bit of a puzzling business model when you can buy a hard copy cheaper and also have the ablity to sell it on if you want.

The beauty of downloading for Sony is that people cant sell it on, so surely they could offer Burnout say for around £18 which at least would be in line with the majority of current retail prices. Im really happy the PSN is free, I'm just saying I would buy more download titles if they were a few quid cheaper rather than a few quid more than the Bluray equivalent. Although I guess if theres lots of people with loads of money on the PSN it wont be a problem for Sony, but during tough times you'd think they would look to other download services (ie iTunes) and learn from them. Thats my 2p anyway.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I've found most SCE produced stuff to be very competitively priced. For example, Wipeout HD, Elefunk, SSDHD, Everyday Shooter, Pixel Junk and so on.

It's only really GT5p that was the exception, but if it wasn't for the BD release being sold cheaper, I still think £25 is a bargain for it. Ooh, forgout about Warhawk too - what, £20 was it? Again, a very good price.

For third-party content, I don't really see how you can blame Sony. For example, take 1942 Joint Strike; that's available of XBLA and PSN, therefore there needs to be parity between the 2 platforms. Maybe MS have a certain price point and that is affecting prices on PSN? It's possible.

As for the EA content, it's EA; what do you expect... EA first, customer second... You can't blame Sony for the price of EA products.

So when you think about it, the Sony side of things is actually not a rip-off at all. I think peeps need to direct their anger at the real source.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I agree Wipeout, Warhawk (£14.99 now) and a lot of SCE is well priced, its just Burnout, GT5 Prologue, Prince of Persia which confuses me. I guess you're right, it could be down to the developers setting the prices rather than Sony.

I see your point. And yeah, it makes sense. But Sony have got to get the funds from the PSN somewhere.

Also, you say you saved £9 but add on the time, pertrol and parking ticket is it worth it?

As it stands I can go buy a PSN game at 3am in the mornig in my boxers while in bed! Well worth the £9. lol

I keep all my games so selling on is not something that concerns me.

Yes, I do agree its a lot more convenient to download, and also saves swapping discs etc. Although I ordered Burnout from The Hut using the HALLOWEEN £2 code (still available at that price now if anyones interested) so didnt cost me anything extra, other than a bit of a wait for it to be delivered.

Thinking about it, Wipeout really shocked me at how cheap it is, I was expecting a £20 price tag for that one. And also Warhawk has dropped to £14.99 (I paid £19.99 or £24.99 I think), maybe they will drop the prices over time on some stuff. Your point about the developers possibly setting the prices may explain it all - given that when the PS3 was first released EA were pushing for games to be £59.99 RRP (rather than the £49.99 that it actually was). So perhaps that explains why the Sony content is better priced.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

I bought Burnout for £19 in PC World store, so saved £6 compared to £25 price tag on PSN and mines a hard copy which I can sell on again.

However I still see this game in high street stores now for £39.99+

So yes i find it puzzling why i can get a hard copies cheaper than DLC. However PSN is not the most expensive price in comparison to say Game or HMV.

So id say the retailers in the high street are the biggest rip-off merchants
Game were offering a second hand copy of Spiderman 3 on blu-ray for £19 - beggars belief really ( i even asked if it was a price tag mistake)

Game were offering a second hand copy of Spiderman 3 on blu-ray for £19 - beggars belief really ( i even asked if it was a price tag mistake)
Having said that, Game aren't always expensive. I got Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, brand new, for £14.99 from game.
I suppose it's the recession taking effect

EDIT: Just realized, this is my 500th post! Free cake for everybody to celebrate! On second thoughts, can't afford the cake. Stupid recession.

Its £38 from The Hut but if you get it from Game and use the £3 code its £37, less reward points, less 9% quidco (Quidco - The web's cashback cooperative) if you go via there so thats quite a saving.

This is a good site to check prices -

PC games, PSP games, XBox 360 games and games for GameCube, NDS and PS2 - Cheap video games price comparison

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

Or even better

Lovefilm for £37.94

Then apply 10% discount QUIDCO10 (you dont have to be a quidco member)
COD5 for £34.14p

LOVEFiLM Shop: Buy Call Of Duty: World At War PS3

dont know how long the discount is valid for, but definately works right now!!

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

Have you tried joining as a US customer? Get an Entropay card, register it in the US and load it with cash from a card of your choice.

I had to do this so I could get Rockband DLC as it wasn't possible to buy DLC from the UK and have looked at the games, which are all priced in $, so roughly 3/4 (used to be half before the £ dropped so much) the cost you would normally pay.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

Can you still buy a game from the PSN then redownload it a number of times (think its 5 times per game) on different PS3's?

I have never paid for a game on the PSN but do remember a game sharing thread on another forum where someone would buy a game then either charge other people to use one of the downloads or trade for another downloadable game. Anyways this would probably be the main reason for the high price of the games on the PSN.

Re: PSN store a rip-off?

Just bought super puzzle fighter 2 as I used to love this game and it is certainly a rip off at £8.

So why do I keep getting these games?
