I am about to buy a 2nd PS3 for my house (the first one is in our living room and I can't get near it until my wife goes to bed!).

My question is, can I use the same PSN user account on both PS3s and if I can, what happens with regard to how Trophies are displayed and synched up to PSN i.e. will I get a consolidated view of my trophies taken from both PS3s?

Yep, you can use your PSN ID on two machines (but not at the same time). Once you earn trophies on one PS3, you can sync them with the Playstation trophy servers, and then on your other PS3 you can sync with the servers as well and this will basically update your local trophy list the with your server one.
So basically it's quite easy to earn trophies on two separate PS3s
