Hi, can anyone help with this combination before i buy some mics and was my money.

i have alot of karaoke xvids that the ps3 can play, so the question is can the singstar or any other mic that works on the ps3 work with other things in other words when not playing a game. I guess if someone has a mic does it work when playing xvids, if someone could answer that I'd very much appreciate it.
