I've raised this query in the 360 forum though not getting much joy.

I have a PS3 and my son has a Xbox 360.

Both of us play online....though both sometimes suffer lag...

He gets lag when i download on my laptop
I get lag when he's online.

I thought it miught be because when i'm downloading and he's online we are both wireless....but my Ps3 is wired so can't be that.

My line stats are great so I have no issue with my connection as I download at 1.4-1.5 mb/sec and have good ping.

Just seems that my laptop takes precedence, then his 360 then my Ps3 in the queue for bandwidth.....

To get more lag for an advantage in online gaming you need to get yourself a so-called "lag switch": Cheating in online games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Essentially it's a box that sits between your PS3 and router, and introduces lag (typically with a foot push-button) at an appropriate moment - such as when you're about to be shot.

Of course IMO (that is In My Opinion) it's classed as cheating, and i'm disappointed when people ask about them

Basically if you're using the internet on other devices on the same network/broadband connection they will interfere and cause lag. The best way to fix it would be to see if you can get a router which does QoS (Quality of Service). This basically allows you to prioritise certain types of internet traffic, so for example you might set gaming ports to the highest priority, http and email to standard priority and bit torrent to lowest priority. This is exactly how my home network is set up, so i can carry on with online PS3 gaming at a consitently low latency even if my wife is downloading a massive World of Warcraft update (uses the BitTorrent protocol)

Yeah i guess he could be asking that. It's a bit ambiguous re: "Help with lagging"

To reduce lag:

- reduce latency by trying to play as local as you can; ie: do NOT play with Australians, but play with UKers (if based in the UK).
- do NOT have any other devices using your internet connection; ie: turn off that PC downloading *cough* videos until you've finished your gaming session (re: He gets lag when i download on my laptop)
- do NOT use wireless, you get ever so slightly more traffic doing handshaking with wireless, plus all the interference etc Gaming is pretty much always better wired.
- check your router is locked down, and other people anrent nicking bandwidth
- check your speed with a speed checker (PS3 now has one built in under Network options) like Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test Download speeds of 2-4MB are probably the least you want for gaming, but you also need a decent upload speed especially for peer-to-peer games. You might just need a better connection.

Also what Workshed said above, but it depends on how techy you want you solution to be.

Basically think of your internet connection as a stream of water, if you have lots of devices taking away water, whats left for you is what you get, and not enough = lag.

With regards the download speed......you said 2-4mb is the least......I mean I actually download at 1.5 meg a sec...,not sync....My line is a 15mb line with o2 which is lightning - or are you saying this is too slow for gaming? If it is then I'm ~"#&ed as I'm not getting any quicker here....or most other places.

On other threads I've been told that Xbox live should not be effected by downloads and that XBL shouldn't effect my PS3....but it does..

That's way more than enough, a 0.5mb sync speed would be fine. The latency is vastly more important than the throughput.

All traffic on your network will be affected by other traffic on your network, be it BitTorrent downloads or anything else large enough to use up most of your bandwidth. For instance if you were downloading a demo on the PS3, this would affect your Xbox Live gaming. That's just how it works.

However if you are just playing an online game on Xbox Live and playing an online game on the PS3 I would not have thought that this would be producing enough traffic to affect either game (as it works fine for me and my sync speed is a modest 5.5mb). Are you saying you can't do this? (assuming the laptop is off, nothing is downloading, there's no demos being downloaded on the Xbox or the PS3)

I know when i was downloading anything bit torrent wise i couldn't even log into psn and that was with a 20 meg download speed. Could you not set your downloads up to run at night? also most i.s.p,s even if you have unlimited downloads they have traffic control/management if you hit a set amount.
