hi, i have a netgear dg834g v5 and use it for wired and wireless purposes, but mainly wired use hardley ever wireless.

i have along 12m ethernet cable (cat5e) running from my router and this goes into a hub switch from the hub switch i have connected 2 more ethernet cables to a ps3 and a netbook, so to put it simple i have extended my existing network via wired method.

however it sometimes disconnects and signs me out my ps3. i checked the cables were in correctly and they are. it will jusst sign me out on the ps3 randomly sometimes once a day and up to about 5 or more.

i was wondering could this be happening becuase there too much activity on my network therefore causing it to disconnect? i.e. because im sometimes online on ps3 and netbook sametime aswell as desktop pc.

i have the router in dmz for my ps3 ip adresss, i have turned off media sharing, the ps3 is latest firmware. what can i do?

do you think it is just the fact i have a long ethernet cable (cate5e) from my router to the switch and becuase the cable is long it can be more tempremental and more prone to disconnect and have problems etc.?

please help if you can.

Cable length won't be the problem.


Try changing the DNS servers in your PS3 Internet settings from Auto to the OpenDNS servers.

What error code does your PS3 report when it logs you out?

Also, what ISP are you with?

Yes they are OpenDNS servers. Always work with everything

Some ISP's have had issues with DNS registration of the PSN sever network recently using these fixed PSN disconnects for a lot of people.

does usually say DNS error on disconnct if this is the issue though.

oh right i see, well it does sometimes say dns error when it disconnects and when i try to sign back in after or soemtimes when i just try to sign in. i will try what you said and give you an update.

i have changed that setting now and its fine so far, i can sign in and everyhting, will keep you posted!

oh yeah also would i have to change anything on my netbook becuase this is also linked with my extended network? i.e. change the dns on that? that can sometimes disconnect too and its usually the same time as when the ps3 signs out.


edit - will i have to change the settings accordingly on my router or just change them on the ps3?

If your Netbook is disconnecting as well then it sounds just like your Internet conenction itself is dropping. Not a lot you can do other than speak to your ISP.

i contact my isp a few weeks ago and they said the connection and everything was fine. nothing wrong that end..


ok well today it has already signed me out the ps3 twice and this is with the dns change. i am going to disable upnp now becuase apparently that can help. i dont know if you actually need it enabled for the ps3 or not do you? oh yes and i turn my router off at night this wouldn't reset the settings would it?

Don't turn your router off every night. The ISP will see this as your line disconnecting and will make changes to try and keep your connection stable. This could well also slow down your Internet connection.

Broadband routers are designed to be left on 24x7.

Turning of Upnp may affect media streaming if you use your PS3 for that.

As mentioned earlier if your Netbook and PS3 are both dropping then it's going to be either your router itself loosing the connection. could be the Router, could be the line.

Either way if your out of contract with TalkTalk and can change ISP's do it. TalkTalk are one of the worst I'm afraid.

well i know its not the router as i just got a new one. i could try changing my isp i suppose. i thought talk talk was very good thought thats a shame

I've just got to the bottom of this with mine. It kept signing me out every 20 mins or so, tried changing router, wireless channel, DNS servers etc but still happened. I kept the router status screen open and when it next dropped I noticed it said DSL Status: Training. I spoke to Sky and I've recently been moved to a different part of the BT Exchange - this starts the line stabalisation process which carrys on for 10 days or so. They have changed the config of my line to set my speed back to 8mb (it had dropped to 3mb) and stop the stabalisation.

ok so are you saying to monitor my router status or log when it next drops?

i think my situation is a little bit different to yours because somedays its absolotuley fine with no sign outs then somedays it can be tempremental, and take note i do sometimes leave my router where other nights i turn it off. maybe its the fact i turn the router off at night sometimes and i have to let it boot itself up properly according to what i have connected to it, in this case the ps3 and netbook. i really odnt know becuase it does soemtimes play up at night too, maybe its overheating or there is too much activity? which there generally is at night.

there is too many factors!!! arghhh.

at the mo its fine so i will keep you posted if i get problems.

hi guys. a few months on and for the most of its has been fine with these changes. however recently it has been playing up again and signing out randomly. i change the dns servers back to auto and have the router in dmz for my ps3 ip address with upnp disabled.

we are thinking it must be my isp talk talk or it could even be to with the phone line exchange and that it needs to be changed. what do you guys think?? please help??

just moved to talk talk which will luckily only be for a couple of months and psn is constantly signing me out, its particulary bad when playing MW2 and my nat type is strict.

for the record its only psn that is having a problem i have set up dmz (or whatever its called) laptop is always fine.

I'm on O2 and have very few issues with getting signed out.

However, there are occasions when I'm not using the network, like once a week where it comes up that I have been signed out randomly.

But I have put that down to a bad router as it is O2's standard....but I am incredibly surprised as to just how good the broadband package is and at £7.50 for 8Meg, I'm pretty happy!!

just a follow up on this thread. and the problem was down to the line i was on with talk talk. they changed it over to a different one and all be fine since then..
